The 27th edition of Exercise , concluded on the East Coast of Australia off Sydney on 21 Aug 2023. The exercise saw participation of Ships, Submarines and aircraft from the , , Japan Maritime Self Defence Force and the . Exercise MALABAR 23 was conducted in two phases, which included a harbour phase from 11 to 15 August 2023 and a sea phase from 16 to 21 August 2023. The Indian Navy was represented by indigenously built Destroyer , Frigate and P8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Other participating units included RAN ships HMAS Choules and HMAS Brisbane, USS Raphael Peralta, JS Shiranui, along with submarines, fighter aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft and shipborne helicopters. While the ships sailed out for the sea phase from Sydney harbour, the Air assets operated from RAAF Amberley Brisbane, where the P-8I Dets involving IN, RAAF and US P-8 crew were stationed. The sea phase of Ex Malabar witnessed complex and high intensity exercises in air, surface and undersea domains, weapon firings and cross deck helicopter operations. The joint exercises at sea honed the war-fighting skills and enhanced interoperability between the four navies to undertake advanced maritime operations. The seamless integration of air assets also showcased the exceptional coordination and interoperability between the Indian, Australian and US maritime patrol aircraft units. The exercise not only reaffirmed the ability of the four navies to operate together as an integrated force but also highlighted their shared commitment to maritime security and regional stability through collaborative training and mutual understanding. At the culmination of five days of multifarious exercises, Exercise MALABAR vividly showcased the strong cooperation, shared values and the collective ability of the four participating nations to ensure a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific promoting peace and security for all.

A transformative workshop on 'Mental Health and Marital Harmony' was organised by at Sagarika, Naval Base, Kochi on 19 Aug 2023. Capt Cyril Mathew, Officer-in-Charge, was the Chief Guest for the event. The workshop was aimed at providing a platform to address and enhance mental well being, emotional resistance and interpersonal relationships. Surg Cdr Uzma, Psychiatrist, brought out the importance of mental health in professional as well as day to day life. Dr Isha Sharma, a renowned psychologist shared her view on marital harmony. Risk factors of life style diseases and its prevention was explained by Surg Cdr Santosh Swain, Station Health Organisation (Kochi). The event witnessed wholehearted participation of more than 400 naval personnel and their families.

Post exchange of pleasantries at sea, the ship entered Durban harbour. On arrival, the ship was received by Cdr Kenneth Singh officiating FOC Durban Area and Assistant to Defence Attachè. The visit apart from commemorating 30 years of diplomatic partnership between India and South Africa is aimed at enhancing interoperability, jointness and mutual cooperation between both Navy and . During the visit, apart from social interaction with senior military and civil dignitaries, the two navies will share best practices and experiences, professional interactions, subject matter expert exchanges and cross deck visits.

The 2023 edition of Defence Correspondents Course , a three weeks course conducted by the Ministry of Defence for select journalists from National and Regional Media organisations, commenced at , Visakhapatnam on 21 Aug 2023. Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena ENC delivered the inaugural address and Shri A Bharat Bhushan Babu, Spokesperson (MoD) and Additional Director General (Media & Communication) gave an insight into Defence Journalism of the course at the Maritime Warfare Center. The aim of DCC is to build a pool of journalists at all levels that understand the Armed Forces and are cognizant of the domain when reporting on stories relating to the maritime environment. During the one week naval attachment, the participants will be addressed by subject matter experts from within the Navy and the Coast Guard. They will acquaint the journalists with various aspects of the Navy including naval operations, naval diplomacy, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and the organisational structure of the Navy and Coast Guard. As part of the course, the participants visited the Indian Naval ship and submarine on 21 Aug 2023 and they were briefed on various facets of life onboard. The participants will also have a scheduled tour at Naval Dockyard, Naval Air Station and onboard Coast Guard ships at Visakhapatnam. A sea sortie onboard a front line warship of the is the highlight of the naval leg of the course, which will provide the journalists an insight into naval operations at sea.

, an , is on an extended-range deployment. The deployment commenced in Jun 2023 and Vagir will reach , on 20 Aug 2023. The submarine, which is Indian Navy’s fifth class submarine, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Jan 2023 and is based in . During her stay in , INS Vagir will participate in various exercises with (RAN) units on the West Coast of Australia. Concurrently, on the East coast of Australia, Indian Naval ships and aircraft are involved in Exercise from 11-21 Aug 2023 and from 22-24 Aug 2023. During the ongoing deployment, basic, intermediate and advanced-level Anti-Submarine exercises are scheduled. In addition, RAN submarine and Indian Naval aircraft are scheduled to exercise with INS Vagir. This deployment will further augment the cooperation and synergy between IN and RAN. The ongoing deployment is a testament to the reach and sustenance of IN submarines. The extended range deployment is the maiden deployment by an IN submarine to Australia and showcases the capability and professional acumen of IN to undertake sustained operations at extended ranges from the base port for prolonged durations. The 13th AGM of Veteran Sailors' Forum (VSF) Charter was held at , on 18 Aug 2023. RAdm J Singh, , chaired the meeting as Patron. Capt T Ranjith Sundaran, Secretary VSF(K) presented the activities and milestones of VSF(K) which was followed by discussions on old and new agenda points. The event witnessed felicitation of five octogenarians, who had attained the age of 80 years, with the traditional "Ponnada". and also presented the latest intiatives and policies during the occasion. In addition, ECHS helpdesk and virtual helpdesks of Naval Pension Office was also set up at the venue to address the issues of veterans. The AGM culminated with lunch with all attendees. More than 300 veterans and their families attended the event.

of maiden course comprising 492 trainees including 77 women Agniveers was conducted at on 19 Aug 2023. The POP was reviewed by Commodore R Rajesh, Director, NIAT. The Agniveers underwent 16 weeks of intensive training in subjects and practical training on various aircraft operated by the . The trainees were administrated the traditional "Aircraft Tradesman Oath" during the parade. Agniveers excelling in academics and extracurricular activities were awarded trophies and certificates. Pankaj Sharma AVR (AE) and Priyanka Gandhi AVR (AL) were adjudged as Best All Rounder- Man and Woman Agniveer respectively. On passing out, Agniveers will be joining Indian Naval Air Squadrons.

The first batch of Trainees of electrical branch passed out from on 18 Aug 2023 on completion of 16 weeks of professional training. The course comprised 415 Agniveers including 40 women Agniveers. The course underwent a comprehensive training in the field of electrical, electronics, weapons and sensors including hands on training. The curriculum was designed to nurture holistic growth, blending intellectual pursuits with practical skills required onboard. Regular engagement in physical and outdoor activities was also integrated to ensure all round development. RAdm Upal Kundu, (Training) reviewed and Valedictory function as Chief Guest. He congratulated the trainees for successfully completing the course and adviced them to keep abreast with the latest developments in marine technology. Adm Ramnath Trophy for 'Best All-round Agniveer (Men) was awarded to Manjeet, AVR (P) and 'Best All-round Agniveer (Women) was awarded to Madhumala Kumari, AVR(P). Cdr NS Bargoti Trophy for 'Best Sportsmen' and 'Best Sportswomen' was awarded to Priyanshu Kumar, AVR(P) and Simran Chhetri AVR (R) respectively.

Maiden batch of 261 comprising 20 women trainees successfully completed 16 weeks of rigorous training at on 19 Aug 2023. The batch included 10 trainees from and six trainees from friendly foreign countries. During this professional training, the trainees were taken through organised curriculum of academics, sports, parade and extra-curricular activities. They were provided with classroom and practical training on various engineering equipment, Fire fighting & damage control, small arms handling & firing. Awards were presented to meritorious Agniveers, which included Himanshu Banga, AVR (ME), for first in order of merit, Gursewak Singh, AVR (ME) for best all-rounder (men) & Asmita K Chavan, AVR (ME) for best all-rounder (women). A 'Train the Trainer' capsule for the instructors of was conducted by at from 16 to 17 Aug 2023. During the capsule various organisational, training and cultural aspects of incorporating safety culture in the training environment were discussed. 18 officers and 25 sailors from various training schools of participated in the capsule. The capsule re-emphasised the importance of achieving an optimum balance in mission effectiveness and safety, as well as imbibing safety culture as a building block in training. Thrust was also laid on honest and prompt reporting of all incidents. In addition, Subject Matter Experts from Headquarters Sea Training covered issues related to afloat training and common lacunae observed during workups which needed attention of trainers.

Women’s Day was celebrated by NWWA Valsura at the Watermanship Training Centre with theme ‘By the Ladies… For the Ladies’. Various team building activities were organised. The event witnessed wholehearted participation by the ladies.
Team Aarogya of NWWA Mandovi organized a medical camp for women on the occasion of International Women’s day on 08 March 2022 at NWWA Kendra. The camp was inaugurated by President NWWA, Mandovi, Mrs Veena Venkatraman. The purpose of the camp was to bring forth the key message for women to prioritise their health and give them an opportunity to seek a detailed health check-up under one roof. The event was organized in partnership with Rotary club Porvorim, INS Jeevanti and Nivedita MI Room. The camp provided medical/ dental/ gynaecologist check-ups and medical docket with complete medical profile for future reference. Testing and awareness for Cervical Cancer was also provided. Over 100 women consisting of NWWA members, defence civilians, women labourers and domestic helps attended the camp.
Logistics Onboard

23rd IN-USN Executive Steering Group (ESG) Meeting was held at New Delhi from 07 to 09 March 2022. The meeting was co-chaired by Vice Admiral Karl Thomas, Commander US 7th Fleet and Vice Admiral Ravneet Singh, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, . Rear Admiral Sean Bailey, Deputy Commander / also attended the meeting. The event witnessed active participation from Indian Navy and including , C5F and representatives. Major issues discussed included , information exchange and training. Both sides also acknowledged the growing cooperation between the two Navies amid emerging challenges on the maritime front, and agreed to enhance collaboration and interoperability towards ensuring maritime security in the .
Naval Air Operations School celebrated its on 07 March 2022. The event saw participation of serving officers and including winners. The event marked Sixty years of training that the school has imparted since its inception in 1960. The celebrations commenced with a Seminar themed ‘Shaping Maritime Air Operations - Evolution and Opportunities’. The inaugural address was delivered by , and Keynote address by Rear Admiral Philipose George Pynumootil, Flag Officer Naval Aviation. As part of the Celebrations, a coffee table book was released. A panel discussion on ‘Effect of newly Inducted Aviation Assets in the War fighting Capability' was also conducted. Veterans, serving officers and families visited the alma mater and interacted with the budding Airborne Tacticians at the School. They were introduced to sophisticated flight simulator (STRATA) Virtual Reality demonstrations and visited Watermanship Survival Training Facility at Garuda. The school also paid homage to the departed warriors by observing a moment of silence. Interaction with veterans and , motivational talk by guest speakers and Barakhana with station crew were also conducted as part of the celebrations.
I create, I dare, I live my passion, I am an entrepreneur. To acknowledge the incredible Naval wives community, NWWA, WNC organised an exhibition on 08 March to celebrate Women's Day 2022. The exhibition was inaugurated by President NWWA (WR), Mrs Charu Singh and the platform enabled Naval wives to showcase their creativity and innovation. The stalls displayed an assortment of hand-crafted items including exquisite ornaments, home decor paraphernalia like crochet, macrame, acrylic art, resin art etc. From customised home linen to colourful fabrics, from the historic Madhubani and Gond art to the distinctive Decoupage, the exhibition was a veritable collection of things both creative and of utility. Stalls teeming with goods and a multitude of shoppers was testimony to the grand success of the event. It inspired close to twenty five budding entrepreneurs. A rewarding moment for NWWA WNC in its endeavour to encourage and salute the spirit of entrepreneurship within the community.
As part of 2022, NSRY, Kochi celebrated ‘Women's Week’ from 02 to 08 March 2022 by conducting various activities exclusively for the women workforce of the Yard. The programs included competitions like poetry, pencil drawing, firefighting (practical competition) and a Women's Walkathon on 07 March 2022, wherein about 80 women employees participated. The celebrations culminated with a health awareness workshop and cultural event organised by the Women of the Yard on 08 March 2022. Rear Admiral Subir Mukherjee was the Chief Guest for the event and felicitated all participants.
NWWA has collaborated with M/s Mahindra Defence towards undertaking welfare activities under CSR. At an event conducted at NOM, Varuna on 05 March 2022 M/s Mahindra Defence Systems presented their invaluable CSR Contribution to Navy Wives Welfare Association. The occasion was graced by Mrs Kala Hari Kumar, President NWWA, Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, CPS, Commander N Raveeswaran (Retd) and dignitaries from Indian Navy, NWWA and Mahindra Defence Systems. The CSR contribution would be utilized for welfare activities of the Naval Community.
In continuation with their relentless drive for Community service and betterment of the underprivileged sections of the society, NWWA Chilka conducted an outreach programme at Nehru Seva Sadan Orphanage and Old Age home, Banpur. Mrs Bindu Pradeep, President NWWA, Chilka along with the members interacted with the elderly people and patiently listened to their concerns about health and well being. House hold items and clothing items were distributed to the inmates of the old age home. Later, the members also distributed Ration , stationary , toiletries amongst the children of Nehru Seva Sadan Orphanage.
Air Crew Diver is required to assist in the rescue of a survivor at sea, who may be unconscious or injured, whether in or out of a ditched aircraft and up to a maximum depth of 30 m. They are also trained to administer first aid treatment to unconscious or injured personnel including .

Naval Architecture – Sound Hull for Smooth Sailing

Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi, , visited INS Hamla from 02 to 04 March 2022. The FOCINC laid the wreath at the War Memorial and was presented Guard of Honour. During the two-day visit, he reviewed the progress of training and infrastructure projects of the establishment. The was accompanied by Mrs Madhumati Hampiholi, President NWWA (Southern Region), who interacted with ladies at Hamla. Tree plantation was also carried out on 04 March 2022 in ‘Miyawaki Plantation’, which is the largest urban forestation in Urban Mumbai.
