01 September 1965 | When nation calls the IAF responds with precision.

On this day in 1965, Air Marshal Arjan Singh ordered air strikes against the Pakistan Forces. Just before sunset, 26 IAF fighter-bombers - 12 Vampires of No. 45 Squadron and 14 Mystères of Nos. 3 & 31 Squadrons, took off from Pathankot for the Chhamb sector.
The mission marked the beginning of Indian air action, with the IAF destroying 10 tanks, 2 anti-aircraft guns and 30-40 Pakistani Army vehicles.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh chaired the annual performance review of Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). On this occasion, CMDs of seven DPSUs presented dividend cheques for the Government’s equity holdings. The event also marked the launch of four key publications, including Atmanirbhar Bharat: A Journey of DPSUs towards Self-reliance; i-DISHA; Roadmap for Indigenization; and Samutkarsh.

Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja assumed charge as the 47th Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) on September 01, 2026. Prior to assuming charge, he paid homage to the fallen heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial, New Delhi. An alumnus of AFMC, Pune, and a distinguished physician & gastroenterologist, he brings nearly four decades of clinical, academic, operational and administrative experience. As DGAFMS, he will spearhead efforts towards strengthening operational medical preparedness, jointness, modernisation, digital health, medical research & innovation and quality healthcare for serving personnel, veterans and their dependents.

Air Mshl Vivek Hande, AVSM, VSM assumed the appointment of DGMS (Air) on 01 Sep 2026 on permanent secondment to the Indian Air Force. Commissioned in Dec 1988, he is an alumnus of AFMC, Tata Memorial Hospital & National Defence College. A Gastroenterologist of national repute, he has held several specialist & administrative appointments, including Commandant, INHS Asvini; Senior Consultant Medicine; and DG (Org & Pers), Office of DGAFMS.

In solidarity with Nepal during this time of crisis, the Indian Air Force continues to be on vigil and ready to extend humanitarian assistance. Within few hours of the disaster, an IAF C-130J aircraft delivered 10 tonnes of essential medicines to support relief efforts.
The following day, an IAF C-17 aircraft transported another 37.5 tonnes of relief supplies, including medicines and food items. Additional air support through C-130 aircraft further strengthened the relief mission, while helicopters remain ready for rescue and evacuation operations.

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Nipun at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, in the presence of Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan. Speaking on the occasion, the Navy Chief described INS Nipun as a powerful addition to the Navy’s capabilities for multi-domain deep-water operations.

Lauding its over 75% indigenous content, Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, FOC-in-C, Western Naval Command, described the vessel as a testimony to India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar-class, INS Nipun is equipped with advanced diving systems and underwater intervention capabilities, enabling sustained support to divers during demanding maritime operations.

Under the theme “National Resurgence through the Lens of Defence Forces,” the lecture will explore the evolving dimensions of jointness, integration, civil-military fusion and multi-domain operations.
