For more than six glorious decades, NLC India Limited has been a forerunner amongst the Public Sector Enterprises in the country in the energy sector, contributing to a lion’s share in

lignite production and significant share in thermal power generation. The Company was incorporated on 14.11.1956 and the former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Mining Operations on 20.05.1957. NLCIL is a Navratna Government of India Enterprise, under the administrative control of Ministry of Coal. Today, the company has set its footprints in PAN India mode in the states of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. A pioneer among the Public Sector Undertakings in energy sector, NLCIL operates 3 opencast Lignite Mines of total installed capacity 28.50 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) at Neyveli in Tamil Nadu, one opencast Lignite Mine at Barsingsar in Rajasthan with an installed capacity of 2.10 MTPA and an open cast coal mine at Talabira in Odisha with an installed capacity of 20 MTPA. The Company is also operating 4 Lignite based pit-head Thermal Power Stations with an aggregate capacity of 3390 Mega Watt (MW) at Neyveli and one 250 MW Lignite based Thermal Power Station (BTPS) at Barsingsar, Rajasthan. A 1000 MW Coal based Thermal Power Station is also in operation at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu through its subsidiary company, NLC Tamilnadu Power Limited (NTPL), a Joint Venture between NLCIL and TANGEDCO (equity participation in the ratio of 89:11). To reap the benefits of the renewable energy revolution as a part of the National Solar Mission, Government of India has set a target to achieve 1,75,000 MW of Solar Power . NLCIL has an ambitious plan to establish various renewable energy projects in Tamilnadu and various states, subject to the techno-commercial viability and also plans to participate in the solar parks announced by various State Governments. Presently, the Company is operating 1370 MW of Solar Power Plants in Southern Districts of Tamilnadu and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and 51 MW Wind Power Plant in Tirunelveli district of Tamilnadu. NLCIL is the first CPSE to cross 1 GW capacity and now the Company has become a member of International Solar Alliance (ISA). NLCIL has big dreams to become a Maharatna Public Sector company. Towards realising this dream, the company is already on expansion mode. NLCIL’s JV with the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) is setting up a 3x660 MW Coal based Thermal Power Station at Ghatampur (GTPS) in Uttar Pradesh, through its subsidiary company Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL) (equity participation in the ratio of 51:49). Mock light-up for Unit-I of GTPS was conducted on 26.03.2021. NLCIL is entering into coal mine projects and has commenced coal production in Talabira-II & III Coal Mine (20 MTPA) in Odisha on 26.04.2020. The Mine started to supply coal to its end use Plant, NTPL TPS, Thoothukudi and now supplies coal to NTPC Thermal Power Stations at Darlipali and Lara in the State of Odisha also, from 14.10.2021. It is also planned to establish a coal based pit-head TPS of 3 x 800 MW at Talabira. In addition, project activities are in full swing at Pachwara South Coal Mine (9 MTPA) in Jharkhand with an anticipated commissioning by 2022-23. Further, a JV Company, ‘Coal Lignite Urja Vikas Private Limited’ (CLUVPL) was incorporated on 10.11.2020 with Coal India Limited (equity participation in the ratio of 50:50). In addition, NLCIL plans to install number of Solar/Wind Power Projects at various parts of the Country. Not just Mining and Power Generation, NLCIL has contributed significantly to the Socio-Economic development of the Nation for more than six decades.

As part of the World Environment Day 2026 celebrations, the Education Department organised a Green Tour for students to promote environmental awareness and sustainable thinking among young minds.

Around 100 students, accompanied by coordinating teachers, enthusiastically participated in the educational excursion. The programme was formally flagged off at 9.30 AM by Shri B. Vaidhyanathan, CGM/TA, in the presence of Shri M. Prabaharan, DGM (Education, Sports & Culture).

The students visited the Agricultural Regional Research Centre, Vridhachalam, where they gained valuable insights into sustainable agriculture, modern farming techniques, crop research, environmental conservation, and the importance of preserving natural resources. The visit also provided an opportunity to interact with experts and understand the role of scientific research in ensuring food security and ecological balance.

The Green Tour was designed to nurture environmental consciousness and inspire students to become responsible stewards of nature.

World Environment Day 2026 was celebrated with enthusiasm at NLC Talabira Thermal Power Project (NTTPP), reaffirming the organisation's commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological conservation.

As part of the observance, a plantation drive was organised in front of the Community Centre at the R&R Colony, Hirma. The programme was inaugurated by Shri Santhosh C. S, Executive Director/Project Head, NTTPP, in the presence of Shri K. Arivazhagan, General Manager (Project), Shri R. K. Pandey, General Manager (Electrical/Land), Shri Sharath Chandra Behera, Deputy General Manager (HR), and other senior executives.

The dignitaries highlighted the significance of this year's theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.", and emphasised the importance of collective action in protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable development.

Employees and contract workers actively participated in the plantation drive and took an environmental pledge reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection, pollution control, and conservation of natural resources.
