MEETING ON SPECIAL INTENSIVE REVISION (SIR) OF ELECTORAL ROLLS HELD IN WEST KHASI HILLS

Nongstoin, August 12: A meeting on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls was held today under the chairmanship of Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, West Khasi Hills District, in the presence of Shri Garod L.S.N D***s, IAS, Secretary to the Govt. of Meghalaya, Home (Police) Department & Electoral Roll Observer for West Khasi Hills District. Electoral Roll Observer, along with Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) and representatives of various political parties.

During the meeting, the Chairperson provided an update on the progress of the SIR exercise being undertaken in the district and discussed the plan ahead for ensuring its smooth, transparent and successful conduct.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for representatives of the political parties to raise issues and share their views regarding the ongoing electoral roll revision exercise. The concerned election officials discussed the various aspects of the SIR process and emphasised the importance of coordination and adherence to the prescribed guidelines and procedures.

The meeting concluded with a call for continued cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the SIR exercise in the district.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026 CELEBRATED IN WEST KHASI HILLS

Nongstoin, August 12: The Office of the District Sports Officer, West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin, observed International Youth Day 2026 on Wednesday at the Market Complex Hall, New Nongstoin, under the theme “Youth Advancing Multilateralism Through Technology and Partnerships.”

Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. She was accompanied by Smt. B. Syiem, District Sports Officer; Dr. Lumbor Mawsor, Vice President, Meghalaya Football Association; and Smt. D. Pakyntein, District Social Welfare Officer. The programme was also attended by teachers and students from various schools and colleges across the district.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. Hema Nayak encouraged the youth of Nongstoin to aspire to become leaders and representatives in various fields, particularly in the civil services and other administrative positions. She emphasised that, despite the district having been in existence for more than five decades, there remains a need for greater representation of youth from Nongstoin in services such as the Meghalaya Civil Service (MCS) and Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

She urged the young generation to break this gap by setting ambitious goals, preparing themselves and striving to enter positions where they can contribute directly to the development and representation of the district. She stated that when there is a lack of representation, whether in political leadership or administrative services such as the civil services, the aspirations and potential of an entire district can remain underrepresented.

The Deputy Commissioner further encouraged students to make use of available opportunities, develop their skills and have the confidence to compete at higher levels. She highlighted that the youth have an important role in shaping the future of West Khasi Hills and should not limit their aspirations because of their background or circumstances.

The celebration highlighted the importance of youth participation, leadership, technology and partnerships in creating opportunities and contributing to the development of society. The programme also provided a platform for students and young people to come together, interact and reflect on their role in shaping the future of the district and the State.

REVIEW MEETING ON HEALTH SECTOR HELD IN WEST KHASI HILLS; FOCUS ON STRENGTHENING HEALTHCARE SERVICES AND ADDRESSING KEY CHALLENGES

Nongstoin, August 11: The Office of the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO), West Khasi Hills District, convened a Review Meeting on the overall functioning, progress and challenges of the Health Sector in the district. The meeting was aimed at taking stock of the progress achieved so far, identifying key areas of concern and discussing measures to further strengthen the delivery of healthcare services across the district.

The meeting was attended by Shri Methodius Dkhar, Hon’ble Minister, Government of Meghalaya, in charge of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department; Labour, Employment and Skill Development Department, among others, and MLA, Mawshynrut Constituency; Shri Gabriel Wahlang, MLA, Nongstoin Constituency; Shri R.G. Momin, MLA, Rambrai-Jyrngam Constituency; Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District; Dr. Mrs. M. Sohliya, District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO); Block Development Officers; Medical Officers and representatives from various health institutions and areas across the district.

The review meeting provided an important platform for a comprehensive assessment of the Health Sector in West Khasi Hills District, including the progress achieved, existing gaps and the challenges faced by healthcare institutions and personnel in delivering services to the people. While an overall improvement in the health sector was noted, the meeting acknowledged that several challenges continue to require focused attention and coordinated intervention.

Among the key concerns discussed were cases relating to Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in the district. The meeting noted that reluctance or refusal among some sections of the public to opt for institutional delivery continues to pose a challenge to ensuring safe motherhood and reducing preventable maternal and infant deaths. The importance of strengthening awareness on antenatal care, institutional delivery, timely medical intervention and the need to seek professional healthcare services was emphasised.

The meeting also deliberated on rumors and misconceptions surrounding vaccination, which have contributed to vaccine hesitancy and refusal among certain sections of the population. The need for sustained awareness campaigns and proper dissemination of accurate information by healthcare personnel and other stakeholders was stressed to build public confidence in vaccination and other preventive healthcare measures.

Another concern discussed was the presence of superstitious beliefs and misconceptions surrounding Aadhaar linkage, which in some instances have created reluctance among beneficiaries and hindered them from accessing health insurance and other healthcare benefits available under various Government schemes. The meeting emphasized the need for sustained awareness and proper dissemination of information at the community level to dispel such misconceptions and ensure that eligible beneficiaries are able to avail themselves of the benefits intended for them.

The meeting also took note of other challenges affecting the effective delivery of healthcare services across the district, including accessibility, public awareness, community participation and the need for stronger coordination among different stakeholders. The discussions highlighted the importance of addressing these challenges in a comprehensive manner, particularly in remote and difficult-to-reach areas of the district.

Dr. Mrs. M. Sohliya, DM&HO, apprised the meeting of the various challenges faced by the Health Department and highlighted the practical difficulties encountered in the delivery of healthcare services across different parts of the district. Medical Officers from various health institutions also shared their experiences and concerns, providing valuable insights into the ground-level situation and the areas requiring further attention.

The three local elected representatives of West Khasi Hills District emphasized the importance of a collective and coordinated approach in addressing the health-related challenges faced by the people. They urged the Health Department to work closely with other line departments, local institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to strengthen awareness and address various social and community-related issues that have an impact on the health sector.

They stressed that improving the health status of the district requires not only strengthening healthcare infrastructure and services but also ensuring greater community participation and awareness. Concerted efforts by different departments and stakeholders were therefore called for to address misconceptions, encourage people to make timely use of healthcare facilities and ensure better utilization of Government health programmes and schemes.

The Hon’ble Minister and the two MLAs took serious note of the various concerns and challenges highlighted during the meeting. They assured that matters requiring intervention at the Government level would be taken up with the concerned authorities, with a view to strengthening the Health Sector and improving the delivery of healthcare services in the district.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen coordination between the Health Department, other Government departments and the community, with the larger objective of improving health outcomes, addressing existing challenges and ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing essential healthcare services and the benefits of Government health schemes and programmes.

Gram Dukan Inaugurated at Riangdo, Mawsynrut Block

Riangdo, 4 August 2026 – A Gram Dukan (Village Mart) managed by Jingsdang Barit SHG, under Rynpei Baiar CLF, which also runs the TCPC at Riangdo, was inaugurated today at the Auditorium Hall, Riangdo, Mawsynrut Block, West Khasi Hills.

The initiative, funded by NABARD, aims to empower Self-Help Group (SHG) members through local entrepreneurship, promote rural enterprises and micro-businesses, create market linkages for local products, improve access to essential goods, and strengthen financial self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.

The programme was graced by Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District, as the Chief Guest, who inaugurated the Gram Dukan by cutting the ribbon. The Guest of Honour was Shri P. Nongkynrih, DDM, NABARD.

The event was attended by Shri R. Khargonor, MCS, BDO, Mawshynrut Block; Shri Malcomestar L. Mawnai, DMM, MSRLS, West Khasi Hills District; and other officials from the district and block levels.

Speakers highlighted the journey and achievements of the TCPC, the importance of Gram Dukan interventions for rural development, and the need to promote entrepreneurship among SHG members. They also emphasized opportunities for financial literacy, market access, digital transactions, and government support to strengthen local livelihoods and economic development.

Nongstoin, 5th August 2026 : The District Election Officer (DEO), West Khasi hills district, today handed over the draft electoral roll prepared under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to the representatives of all recognised Political Parties of the district.

📌Nongstoin, 4th August,2026 : The office of the DEO, West Khasi hills district conducted briefing for BLOs on their roles & responsibilities during claims & objections period under SIR of the Electoral roll.

The briefing focused on the procedures to be followed during claims & objections period to ensure that all eligible electors are able to file claims for inclusions, objections or corrections in the draft Electoral roll in accordance with the guidelines of the ECI.

It may be noted that the Claims & objections period for the state of Meghalaya & others will commence on 5th August,2026 & continue until 4th September,2026.

Two-Day 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat' Programme Concludes at Nongstoin College

Nongstoin, July 31: The two-day 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat' programme, organised by Nongstoin College in collaboration with MY Bharat Kendra, Nongstoin, concluded successfully today at Nongstoin College. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students representing various schools and colleges across Nongstoin and served as a platform to promote awareness against substance abuse through creativity, dialogue, and healthy competition.

The valedictory function was graced by Smt. C.N.N. Sangma, Assistant Commissioner, as the Chief Guest. Also present on the occasion were Shri K. Jethwani, Deputy Director, MY Bharat Kendra, Nongstoin, Dr. (Mrs.) I. Mawthoh, Principal, Nongstoin College, faculty members, dignitaries, and a large gathering of students.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. C.N.N. Sangma highlighted the crucial role of young people in nation-building and urged students to recognise their immense potential and use their talents in a positive and meaningful manner. She stated that substance abuse has become one of the greatest challenges confronting society today, affecting not only individuals but also families and communities. She encouraged the students to stay away from drugs and other intoxicating substances, emphasising that every youth has the ability to bring about positive change through education, discipline, creativity, sports, culture, and community service.

She further remarked that the youth are the pillars of the nation and the future belongs to them. By making wise choices and leading healthy lifestyles, they can contribute significantly towards building a progressive, peaceful, and prosperous India. She also called upon students to become ambassadors of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, spreading awareness among their peers and within their communities about the harmful effects of drug abuse.

The two-day programme featured a series of competitions aimed at fostering awareness while providing a platform for students to showcase their creativity, confidence, and artistic talents. The competitions included Painting, Slogan Writing, Debate, Slam Poetry, Rap Battle, Singing, and Dancing. Through these events, participants conveyed powerful messages highlighting the importance of living a drug-free life and encouraging society to collectively fight against substance abuse.

Free Hepatitis Screening and Awareness Programme Marks World Hepatitis Day in Nongstoin

Nongstoin, July 28: The Office of the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO), West Khasi Hills District, observed World Hepatitis Day by organizing a free Hepatitis screening and awareness programme at the New Nongstoin Market under the theme "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down."

The programme was chaired by Dr. W. Sutnga, District Nodal Officer, NVHCP, West Khasi Hills, who also delivered the welcome speech. In his address, he highlighted the importance of creating awareness, promoting early screening, and encouraging the public to adopt preventive measures to eliminate viral hepatitis.

A major highlight of the programme was the awareness play performed by the students of the GNM School of Nursing, Nongstoin. Through an engaging and informative skit, the students creatively portrayed the modes of transmission of Hepatitis B and C, the importance of vaccination, early screening, and adopting safe practices to prevent the disease. The performance effectively communicated vital health messages to the public and was well appreciated by those present. The students were accompanied by their tutors, Mrs. P. Lyngkhoi and Miss C. Lyngkhoi, who were also present during the programme.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. (Mrs.) M. K. Sohliya, District Medical & Health Officer, West Khasi Hills, explained that Hepatitis B and C can spread through infected blood transfusions, mother-to-child transmission, unprotected sexual contact with multiple partners, sharing contaminated needles and syringes, and the use of unsterilized razors or other sharp instruments, such as those used during barbering or tattooing.

She emphasized that screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious complications caused by hepatitis. Although many people may feel healthy and believe they do not require testing, she encouraged everyone to undergo screening, stressing that early detection can help prevent life-threatening diseases such as liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. She further highlighted that hepatitis is preventable through vaccination and noted that pregnant women are routinely screened to protect both mothers and their babies, enabling them to lead healthier lives.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr Kordor Lyngdoh, Epidemiologist, DM&HO, West Khasi Hills.

The free hepatitis screening camp witnessed an encouraging public response, with many people availing themselves of the opportunity to get tested. The observance successfully combined public awareness, community participation and free screening, reinforcing the importance of early detection and prevention in the fight against viral hepatitis.

Two-Day Training Programme on Bee Colony Management and Mitigation of Colony Losses Concludes at Nongstoin

Nongstoin, July 22: The two-day Training Programme on Bee Colony Management and Mitigation of Colony Losses, organised by the Meghalaya Farmers' Empowerment Commission (MFEC), Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the District Horticulture Office, West Khasi Hills District, concluded today at the Horticulture Training Hall, District Horticulture Office, Nongstoin.

The programme was inaugurated by Smt. E. Marbaniang, District Horticulture Officer, West Khasi Hills District, who highlighted the importance of scientific beekeeping in enhancing agricultural productivity, improving pollination, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers.

The training sessions were conducted by Dr. Lakshmi Rao, Assistant Director, Central Bee Research and Training Institute (CBRTI), and Honorary Technical Adviser to the Meghalaya Farmers' Empowerment Commission (MFEC), along with Shri Frankie Ryntathiang, Executive Assistant, MFEC. The resource persons imparted both theoretical and practical knowledge on scientific beekeeping and sustainable bee colony management.

The technical sessions covered topics such as Bee Colony Losses, Absconding, Swarming, Bee Diseases, Bee Pests and Predators, Biology of Honey Bees, and Seasonal Bee Colony Management. Participants also learned scientific methods for disease prevention, colony health monitoring, and seasonal management practices to minimise colony losses and improve honey production.

The programme witnessed the participation of beekeepers and farmers from different parts of West Khasi Hills District, who actively engaged in the interactive sessions and practical demonstrations. The organisers expressed confidence that the training would promote scientific apiculture practices and strengthen the capacity of local beekeepers. The programme concluded with an interactive discussion and a question-and-answer session, followed by the distribution of Certificates of Participation to all the participants.
