Earlier Palampur was a part of the local Sikh Kingdom but later it came under the British. The Kangra valley was the `Trigarta' of old, where the Palampur town is situated. It was one of the leading hill states and was once a part of the Jalandhar kingdom. The Palampur gets its name from 'Pulum' which means the abundant water. Countless streams and brooks criss-cross the landscape and in their intricate mesh, hold tea gardens and rice paddies. The town of Palampur came into being when Dr. Jameson, Superintendent of Botanical Gardens, introduced the tea bush from Almora in 1849. Neughal Khad, a 305 meters wide chasm, which falls over a 100 meters to the Bundla stream. The stream is a thin streak running over stony ground far below the cliff. During the monsoon season, it swells and rages - madly over the entire width of the chasm taking stones and boulders along with it and makes loud roaring noise like thunder. Palampur is famous for its picturesque snow-clad mountains, pine forests and tea gardens. Due to the numerous streams flowing from the mountains to the plains through Palampur, the town gets its name from the local word 'Pulum' meaning abundance of water. Palampur is located at 32.12°N 76.53°E below the Dhauladhar Range at an approximate height of 3800-4000 ft above sea level. Tourist Attractions:- the Palampur region is a major tourist attraction as it is the abode of Buddhism, location of numerous temples and various outdoor activities. Abode of Buddhism: The Tibetan government in exile is headquartered inDharamshala, which is approximately 40 kms from Wah. Mcelodganj which is 10 kms above Dharamshala is best known as the home of His Holiness Dalai Lama. His monastery TsuglagKhang is also located there. The other monasteries nearby are Tashi Jong, Norbulingka and Deer Park Institute. Temples: Himachal Pradesh is known as 'Dev Bhoomi' or 'The land of the Gods'. There are numerous temples in our vicinity namely Chamunda Devi, Baijnath, Jwalamukhi and Masrur temple.

2) Baijnath: It is a pilgrimage centre of the Hindus in Kangra district. It is the oldest existing Shiva temple in the country.

4) Masrur: It is known for its monolithic temples. There are 15 monolithic rocks cut temples in the indo-aryan style, richly carved.

7) Al-Hilal: A few kilometres from the city of Palampur is Al-Hilal, a place of unparalleled charm. During the conquests of Kangra by Maharaja Renjit Singh, this place was a military bastion.

8) Andretta: The charming village, spread below thethickly wooded hill and sprawling plains of the Kangra Valley was once the home of the famous painter Sardar Sobha Singh and the playwright Ms Norah Richards. Now Andretta is a centre for various artistic activities such as pottery and is just 13-km away from Palampur.

9) Bir and Billing: Sheltered by the mountains and surrounded by tea gardens, Bir serves as a landing ground for hang & para gliders as well as known for it's Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan handicrafts. One of the best aero-sports sites in the world, Billing is 14-km from Bir. The mountain ranges set like an amphitheatre, offer opportunities for high altitude and cross-country flying for more than 200-km.

10) Neughal Khad: Close to the temple of Bundelmata temple, is this 300-metre-wide chasm through which the Neugal stream flows.

13) Dharmshala McLeod Ganj Nadi: This small town is a favourite tourist resort near by palampur and remains flooded with foreign tourist round the year. McLeod Ganj has shot into prominence due to the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama who has his residence in this small, isolated and peaceful town. He arrived along with thousands of his followers from Tibet in 1959 to take refuge in India. This town is populated chiefly by Tibetans and in the adjoining hills are situated the gaddi villages.

14) Saurabh Van vihar : (4 KM from town) Named after the valiant Army officer, Captain Saurabh Kalia, Saurabh Van Vihar is in Neugal near Palampur. Managed by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, the Van Vihar was set up with the purpose of providing information to the tourists about the nature and environment. The Vihar sprawls on an area of 35 acres and there is a green park located here. The area is surrounded by the Dhauladhar mountains and offers scenic views of the surrounding.

15) Neugal Khad : ( 2 km. Neugal Khad provides a fine view of the Dhauladhar range. It is roaring in the rainy season and gurgling all the year round. Himachal Tourism cafe provides food and a fine view from its restaurant. It is a famous picnic spot and ideal for a day escape from busy life.
