Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is one of the protected wild life sanctuaries located in the Palakkad district, Kerala. It is spread over a 643.66 square kilometre in the bio diversity hot spot, Western Ghats. It is surrounded by Nenmara forest division in the North, Chalakudy forest division in the west, Vazhchal forest division in the south and Anamalai Tiger Reserve in the East. Its diverse landscap

es host an enchanting ecosystem for the rich flora and fauna. Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is the home to 39 mammal species, 41 Amphibian species, 178 Birds species, 61 reptile species, 47 fish species, 1049 insect species, and 202 butterfly species. The sanctuary is also referred as the ‘state capital for the massive gaur’ by wildlife experts.

വനമഹോത്സവം (Van Mahotsav) എന്നാൽ “വൃക്ഷങ്ങളുടെ ഉത്സവം” എന്നാണ് അർത്ഥം. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ വനവൽക്കരണവും പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണവും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി എല്ലാ വർഷവും ആചരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ദേശീയ വൃക്ഷത്തൈ നടീൽ ഉത്സവമാണിത്
1950-ൽ അന്നത്തെ കേന്ദ്രഭക്ഷണ-കൃഷി മന്ത്രിയായിരുന്ന കെ. എം. മുൻഷി (K.M. Munshi) ആണ് വനമഹോത്സവത്തിന് ഔദ്യോഗികമായി തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചത്. പൊതുജനങ്ങളിൽ പരിസ്ഥിതിബോധം വളർത്തുകയും കാടുകളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം.

World Environment Day 2026 Observed at Parambikulam Tiger Reserve🍀🍀🍀🍀🍃

In connection with World Environment Day 2026, various programmes were organized at Parambikulam Tiger Reserve on June 5.

The function was presided over by Sri Geo Basil Paul, Range Forest Officer, Parambikulam Range, and inaugurated by Smt. Anita, Vice President of Muthalamada Grama Panchayat. Ward Member Sri Manikandan, Smt. Aruna Gopi, Chairperson of Kudumbashree, and Sri Arun Maharaja, Range Officer, Karimala, extended their felicitations and addressed the gathering.

As part of the celebrations, a spot quiz competition was conducted for tourists, and prizes were distributed to the winners. Various awareness activities were also organized to educate the public about the importance of environmental conservation. A tree-planting programme was conducted thereafter.

Uniforms were distributed to the watchers of Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. In addition, a Seed Ball Throw Programme was organized in collaboration with officials from the Telangana Forest Department. The initiative aimed to promote afforestation and biodiversity conservation.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Sri Prakashan, PFM Coordinator. The events ended with a strong message emphasizing environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources.

As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve organized a Quiz Competition for high school students of Chittur Taluk on 4 June 2026 at St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Kollengode.
The programme aimed to create environmental awareness among students and encourage their interest in nature conservation and biodiversity. Students from various schools across Chittur Taluk participated enthusiastically in the competition.
The winners of the competition were:
First Prize: Vishnu Priya, GVGHSS Chittur
Second Prize: Linta, KKMHSS Vandithavalam
Third Prize: Pavithra, GVHSS Chittur
The prizes for the competition were generously sponsored by Nadam Foundation.
The prizes were distributed to the winners by Sri Manoj Balakrishnan, Deputy Director, Wildlife Education, who served as the Quiz Master for the programme.
