Bihar Tourism

Bihar Tourism Amongst all the states in the country, Bihar is probably the one that enjoys a unique history. And yet, it has not shied away from embracing the modern.

It is here that world religions Buddhism and Jainism were born, even as Hinduism thrived. It is here that a prominent proponent of a fourth religion - Guru Gobind Singh of the Sikhs was Born. And it is here that the world's first university at Nalanda was established. And if all that is not enough, it was in Bihar that Gandhiji first launched his Satyagraha movement against British rule. Bihar cer

tainly bears the heavy weight of history, but bears it with much sensitivity and awareness. For both Buddhists and Jains, the landscape is dotted with monuments and sacred pilgrimage centres, while the Hindus have no less a number. The old learning centres continue in the form of newer centres of excellence, the olden day trade centers have paved way for new economy and even newer technologies. So much so that the per capita income in Patna, the capital, is higher that that of the National average. Bihar is a land blessed with beauty both metaphysical and physical. Its vast plains, fed by some of the country's well known rivers, have ensured prosperity. It has a rich culture and heritage and its people are hardworking and fun loving. Sonepur Mela is held on Kartik Poornima (the full moon day) in the month of November in Sonepur, Bihar, on the confluence of river Ganges and Gandak. It is also known as Harihar Kshetra Mela and it attracts visitors from all over Asia. Till date, it is the biggest cattle fair of Asia and stretches on from fifteen days to one month. It has its origins during ancient times. This is when Chandragupta Maurya used to buy elephants and horses across the river Ganges. The Sonepur Cattle Fair once used to attract traders from places as distant as Central Asia.
