A note from our Intern, Gabby:

Today, I say goodbye to PSDF! It has been such a wonderful and warm experience working with Mohan and the team here over the past two weeks. With them, I worked on starting social media pages (which you all get to see, here!) and updating the website. Additionally, I introduced the team to some useful tools such as ChatGPT and Canva, which they will be able to use for a diverse array of tasks.

Aside from practical assistance, I also got to learn about the work that PSDF does in the community here in Puducherry. They do incredible outreach work, and support thousands of women in their ongoing journey towards empowerment and independence. They do so through relentless problem-solving in the Family Counseling Centers and through economic empowerment in the Self-Help groups.

I was very much inspired by my time here. The hearts and minds of the team should not go unappreciated!! We welcome all of the support you can give to this organization, online or otherwise, because it will help them continue their mission for decades to come.

Over the course of the last year, PSDF has held many women’s empowerment meetings in rural areas. The purpose of these meetings is to promote women’s independence and encourage healthy family dynamics by connecting women together in a lecture and discussion format. These meetings are conducted on site with a panel of speakers, and are formatted with the intention to educate and bring awareness to women. At PSDF, we help start Self-Help Groups of women in Pondicherry and surrounding working areas with the purpose of helping women find community support for starting income-generating activities. Within these groups, we facilitate microcredit programs, in which the women pool funds to take out small loans for their businesses.

In September, one PSDF SHG, Kavinila, succeeded in securing a microcredit loan for the amount of 9,350,000 INR. This group of women will use the loans to support their businesses; a variety of small shops and tailoring businesses that allow additional income to enter their households and support their families, while also fostering their independence.

NEW! Launch of Drug Abuse Reduction Program
PSDF and a network of NGOs are working to create a drug-free society. There is a state-wide prevalence of the use of opioids and other drugs. The Tamil Nadu governor, his excellency R. N. Ravi, joined our campaign on October 25th 2023 at Raj Nivas, Chennai. The PSDF Secretary, Dr. K Mohanasundaram, received the handbook for conscious building, counseling, career guidance, and rehabilitation from the governor himself. Together, we discussed the possibility of creating two new programs: one for drug use and abuse prevention and reduction, and one for career guidance for students.

Happy New Year from PSDF! We hope that this year will be full of amazing opportunities for everyone.

We have some exciting plans for new initiatives this year, and as we’re working on those, we would like to share our successes from 2023:

- We hosted several women's empowerment sessions, with the purpose of encouraging effective strategies to combat family problems, promoting the safety of women and their children, and to bring awareness to both social and legal resources
- We dedicated our time to fighting for drug abuse reduction and prevention through innovating with new programs and working hard to promote them
- We collaborated with outside organizations, students, and experienced professionals to supplement our own knowledge with a little external expertise

Our programs have empowered the women of our community, equipped them with strategies for managing familial issues, and supported the care and protection of children.

PSDF is a civil society organization with the goal of eradicating caste-based discrimination against women, children, and Dalits. We focus on promoting equal rights and equality for all through education, financial independence programs, combating violence against women, and promoting general awareness of the issues that disadvantaged and vulnerable populations face in Puducherry and the surrounding working areas.

We want to welcome you to our page, where we will be consistently communicating with the public about our ongoing projects, our many successes, and our positive impacts in the community.
