On Independence Day, the CGST Puducherry Commissionerate introduced two new practices to highlight the historical and cultural significance of two buildings in its possession: the Douane Customs building and the Old Light House. Constructed in 1836, the Old Light House served as a beacon for ships navigating the Bay of Bengal, while the Customs House initially served as a French colonial flag post. In 1941, the Customs House was transformed, and the French flag remained on top.Puducherry gained independence on November 1, 1954, when the instrument of transfer of power agreement was signed at the Lt. Governor’s office. Shortly after, Shri R.K. Nehru, then India’s Foreign Secretary, unfurled the Indian tricolor at the Customs House, marking the historic moment when the French flag was lowered and the Indian flag raised at the Douane Customs building. The Old Light House, built in 1836, was decommissioned in 1979, and its historical importance gradually forgotten . To revive these buildings’ heritage, the Commissionerate initiated flag ceremonies with trumpet sounds. Daily flag ceremonies now take place with pride, and light is lit on top of the Old Light House. These events honor the buildings’ historical events, reminding everyone of their cultural and historical significance. They serve as a precursor to the renovation of the Old Light House building, which will showcase even more historical events related to the department. Stay tuned . Jai hind 🇮🇳.

🌊 A Beacon Through Time – Since 1836 🌊
Rising proudly along the Coromandel Coast, the Old Light House is more than just a building – it’s a storyteller of the sea. Built in 1836 under Governor Saint Simon and designed by Engineer Louis Guerre, this 29-metre-high round tower with its square base and 9-metre-deep foundation once lit the way for mariners braving the night.

✨ In its early days, 12 oil lamps with silver reflectors cast a warm glow visible up to 15 miles away. By 1913, the lighthouse embraced modernity, replacing oil lamps with 1000-volt electric lamps. In 1931, a brilliant rotating beam extended its reach to 25 miles, completing a rotation every 36 seconds – a marvel of its time.

⚓ For over a century, this sentinel stood watch, guiding ships safely along the coast until 1979, when it was decommissioned. The structure then found new life, serving the Customs & Central Excise Department, while still holding on to its proud maritime spirit.

Today, lovingly maintained by the CGST Puducherry Commissionerate, the Old Light House stands as a heritage icon, a reminder of Puducherry’s deep-rooted connection to the sea, and a symbol of innovation, resilience, and history. 🇮🇳
