Continuing its sustained campaign against illegal mining, District Police Poonch has intensified enforcement measures to curb the unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals across the district.

As part of the ongoing drive, Police Station Poonch today seized four tractor trolleys found involved in illegal mining activities. The action was taken during a special checking and enforcement operation conducted by the police within the jurisdiction of Police Station Poonch.

The seized vehicles were found engaged in the unauthorized extraction and transportation of mining material in violation of the applicable rules and regulations. Acting promptly, the police seized the vehicles to prevent further illegal mining activities.

The Mining Department has been informed for initiating necessary legal proceedings and further action under the relevant provisions of the mining laws and regulations.

District Police Poonch remains committed to a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal mining and will continue to take stringent action against those involved in the unlawful exploitation of natural resources.

Two Suspected Drug Peddlers Arrested with Charas and Ganja-like Substances in Mendhar

Poonch, September 06, 2026:

Continuing its sustained campaign against the menace of drugs and with a firm commitment to safeguarding the younger generation from the harmful effects of narcotic substances, District Police Poonch has achieved a significant success in its ongoing anti-narcotics drive.

A police party from Police Station Mendhar, while conducting routine patrolling near New Jaba Bridge, Dachal, Mendhar, intercepted and apprehended two suspected drug peddlers.

The accused have been identified as Mohd Imtiyaz and Mohd Aftab, both presently residing at Sariya Market, Mendhar. During the search, the police party recovered approximately 4.32 grams of charas-like substance from Mohd Imtiyaz and 17.88 grams of ganja-like substance from Mohd Aftab.

In this connection, FIR No. 169/2026 under Section 8/20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Mendhar, and further investigation has been taken up to ascertain the source and intended destination of the recovered contraband and to identify any other persons involved in the illegal drug trade.

District Police Poonch reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and abuse and reaffirmed its commitment to taking stringent legal action against those involved in the illegal trade of narcotic substances. The public is also urged to remain vigilant and share information regarding drug-related activities with the police so that timely action can be taken.

District Police Poonch Organises Police Martyrs T20 Cricket Tournament 2026 to Honour the Supreme Sacrifice of Police Martyrs

District Police Poonch today inaugurated the Police Martyrs T20 Cricket Tournament 2026 at the Sports Stadium, Poonch, as a tribute to the brave police personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by SSP Poonch Sh. Shafqat Bhat, JKPS, who highlighted the importance of remembering and honouring the sacrifices of police martyrs. Additional SP Poonch Dr. Ajay Sharma, JKPS; DySP DAR Sh. Shashikant Sharma; and SHO Poonch Insp Aejaz Wani were also present on the occasion.

The ceremony was attended by several prominent personalities, senior citizens and members of civil society, including Sh. Jasbir Singh, Principal, Degree College Poonch; Sh. Tariq Khan, President, Shaheed DySP Manjeet Singh Memorial Volleyball Club Poonch; Sh. Mohd. Qasim, District Youth Services & Sports Officer, Poonch, Sh. Poonch Police Crack Down on Illegal Bovine Transportation; 10 Bovines Rescued

Poonch, August 31, 2026

Continuing its sustained drive against the illegal transportation of bovine animals, Police Station Surankote intercepted two vehicles during naka checking and rescued 10 bovine animals.

During naka checking conducted by a police party of Police Station Surankote, two Tata Mobile vehicles bearing Registration Nos. JK12D/5579 and JK12B/9220 were intercepted and checked. During the checking, both vehicles were found carrying 05 bovine animals each, taking the total number of bovine animals rescued to 10.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the bovine animals were being transported without obtaining the requisite prior permission from the competent authority. Accordingly, FIR No. 284/2026 and FIR No. 286/2026 under Section 223 BNS read with Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act have been registered at Police Station Surankote.

Both vehicles were seized and all 10 bovine animals, have been rescued safely, and two persons involved in the illegal transportation have been arrested.

Further investigation into both cases is underway. District Police Poonch remains committed to curbing illegal transportation of bovine animals and ensuring strict enforcement of the law.

DISTRICT POLICE POONCH CRACKS THEFT CASE; THIEF ARRESTED, STOLEN PROPERTY WORTH LAKHS RECOVERED

Poonch, August 29, 2026:
In a significant breakthrough against property crimes, District Police Poonch has successfully cracked a theft case registered at Police Station Surankote, arrested the thief involved and recovered stolen property worth lakhs of rupees.

During the intervening night of August 19/20, 2026, a theft was committed at the shop of Sahir Ali S/o Shoukat Ali, R/o Samote, Ward No. 08, Surankote, wherein various articles, including edible oil, ci******es, ghee, a gas cylinder, cash and other valuables, were stolen, causing substantial financial loss to the shopkeeper.

In this connection, FIR No. 273/2026 U/s 331(4)/305 BNS was registered at Police Station Surankote, and investigation was taken up.

During the course of investigation, the police team, through sustained and professional efforts, identified and arrested the thief, namely Zaffar Iqbal S/o Barkat Hussain, R/o Dundhak, Surankote. On the basis of his disclosure and further investigation, stolen property worth lakhs of rupees has been recovered.

The recovery includes various items reported stolen from the shop. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the complete modus operandi, identify any possible accomplices and effect further recoveries.

District Police Poonch remains committed to curbing theft and other property-related crimes and taking stringent action against persons involved in criminal activities. The public is also requested to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to the police.

ATM-SWAPPING FRAUDSTER & DRUG PEDDLER ARRESTED BY PS SURANKOTE

Poonch, August 28, 2026:
In a significant breakthrough against financial fraud and drug trafficking, District Police Poonch has arrested Aejaz Ahmed S/o Abdul Aziz, R/o Morha Bachai, Tehsil Surankote, District Poonch, in connection with FIR No. 278/2026 U/S 318(4), 303(2) BNS, registered at PS Surankote.

During investigation, it was revealed that the accused allegedly targeted ATM users, particularly at ATMs without security guards. He would offer assistance to victims, observe their PIN while they made transactions and cleverly replace their ATM cards with another card. He would then use the swapped card and PIN to withdraw money from their accounts.

Investigation further revealed that the money obtained through such fraudulent withdrawals was allegedly used for procuring he**in (Chitta), which the accused reportedly consumed as well as sold to others, establishing a nexus between financial fraud and drug trafficking.

The accused has been found involved in several other cases, including:

- FIR No. 58/2025 U/S 318(4) BNS, PS Surankote
- FIR No. 249/2025 U/S 8/21 NDPS Act, PS Surankote
- FIR No. 148/2026 U/S 8/27 NDPS Act, PS Poonch

Several complaints regarding similar ATM frauds are also under enquiry, and further linkages are being investigated. The accused is presently on police remand, with further investigation underway.

District Police Poonch appeals to citizens to remain vigilant at ATMs, never share their PIN or hand over ATM cards to strangers, and immediately report any unauthorised transaction. Citizens who may have fallen victim to similar ATM-swapping frauds are requested to approach the nearest Police Station.

POONCH POLICE INTENSIFIES ANTI-NARCOTICS DRIVE; TWO DRUG PEDDLERS ARRESTED, CONTRABAND RECOVERED

Poonch, August 15, 2026: Continuing its sustained campaign against drug trafficking and the illegal possession of narcotic substances, District Police Poonch intensified anti-narcotics operations across the district. In two separate operations, Police Station Surankote apprehended two suspected drug peddlers and recovered contraband from their possession.

In the first operation, a police team of Police Station Surankote apprehended Sulman Amin, aged 20 years, S/o Mohd. Amin Khatana, R/o Lasana, Tehsil Surankote, District Poonch, at Jogi Morh, Surankote. During the search, 8.49 grams of he**in-like substance and 4.98 grams of ganja-like substance were recovered from his possession. The accused was arrested and the recovered substances were seized. In this connection, FIR No. 266/2026 U/S 8/20/21/22/25 NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Surankote.

In the second operation, another police team of Police Station Surankote apprehended Asif Iqbal, aged 28 years, S/o Ashaq Hussain Bhatti, R/o Fazalabad, Surankote, District Poonch, at Samote, Surankote. During the search, 20.19 grams of ganja-like substance was recovered from his possession. The accused was arrested and the contraband seized. Accordingly, FIR No. 267/2026 U/S 8/20 NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Surankote.

The combined recovery in the two cases comprises 8.49 grams of he**in-like substance and 25.17 grams of ganja-like substance, reflecting the continued efforts of Surankote Police to curb the illegal possession, transportation, supply and distribution of narcotic substances.

Both cases are presently under investigation. Police are conducting further investigation to ascertain the source of the recovered contraband and the possible backward and forward linkages involved in its supply and distribution. Efforts are also underway to identify other persons connected with the narcotics network.

Poonch Police reiterates its commitment to a zero-tolerance approach towards drug trafficking and drug peddling. Sustained checking, surveillance and targeted operations are being carried out across the district to prevent narcotic substances from reaching vulnerable sections of society, particularly the youth.

The general public is urged to remain vigilant and extend cooperation to the Police in the collective fight against the drug menace. Any information regarding drug peddling, trafficking or illegal possession of narcotic substances may be shared with the Police. The identity of the informer will be kept confidential.

District Police Poonch Organises Grand Tiranga Bike Rally to Promote Patriotism and National Unity

Poonch, August 14, 2026: In the spirit of patriotism and in connection with the ongoing Independence Day celebrations, District Police Poonch organised a grand Tiranga Bike Rally today from Sports Stadium, Poonch, with the objective of promoting national unity, brotherhood, patriotism and respect for the National Flag.

The rally was jointly led by Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Sh. Ashok Sharma, JKAS, and Senior Superintendent of Police Poonch, Sh. Shafqat Hussain, JKPS, who flagged off the rally from Sports Stadium Poonch.

A large number of police personnel and officers participated in the rally, carrying the Tricolour with pride and spreading the message of unity, peace and national integrity. The sight of bikers carrying the National Flag and moving through the town created an atmosphere of enthusiasm and patriotic fervour among the public.

The rally passed through prominent areas of Poonch, with participants raising patriotic slogans and encouraging citizens, particularly the youth, to actively participate in the celebrations and uphold the values symbolised by the Tricolour.

Speaking on the occasion, SSP Poonch Sh. Shafqat Hussain, JKPS, highlighted that such initiatives strengthen the bond between the police and the public and inspire the younger generation to remain connected with the values of patriotism, unity and national service. He emphasised that the Tiranga represents the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters and martyrs and reminds every citizen of their responsibility towards the nation.
