Today Makar Sankranthi / Uttarayan Yatra Makar Chaurashi besh (dress up )of Mahaprabhu Jagannath
Makar Sankranti in Puri Jagannath temple is celebrated with great devotion and all rituals are being performed independently since a very long time. The rituals start with Mangal Aarti , the prasad to the Lord, Phuta Paharana and the triad wear Makar Chula ( a type of Head-gear). The Makara Chaula (Rice) is taken around the temple in a procession called the Makar Bedha. After offering the morning dhupa to the Lord, comes the Jatrangi Mahasnana (a special bath) to the God and the triad are dressed in new clothes and adorned with beautiful jewellery and 6 types of ornaments. In a huge procession , the Bhoga / Offerings are brought infront Mahaprabhu by Talichaa Pradhani sebayata . After this the afternoon rituals commence. After the Mudirasta prasad, the Pujapanda completes the afternoon aarti and prays with 16 methods to appease the Lord. After tera is tied infront Mahaprabhu , the inner sanctum is cleaned
The Suar (Jagannath temple chef )makes the Makar Chaula with coconut,pure ghee, sweets, spices and milk for the Lord.
Makar Chaaula, a special kind of sweet dish prepared with newly harvested rice, jaggery, grated coconut, banana, chenna ( cheese ), Khua, various fruits, dry fruit and milk .
Pantibadu tie a cloth around their mouth and take the MakarChaula around the temple in a procession.
Shri Jagannath have a lot of devotees at his service who perform a lot of different rituals and offer services to the Lord in their strength.
Then the MahaBhoi brings milk, gudiya-shakara(famous Shri mandira delicacy), phena(a type of sweet), hadapa nayak nali paan(a type of paan) and chachi paan. Once this is presented to the Lord , the Mudirasta presents this as offering to the Lord. Afterwards, the Puja Pandas finish the offering to the Lord by Panchaupachara.
Once the bhog offering is over, Puja pandas( head Mandir priests) , Patimahapatra and Mudirasta complete the aarti. On this day 84 types of Bhoga are offered to Mahaprabhu . These bhoga are Makar Chaurashi bhoga .
