AIIMS RAIPUR PARTICIPATED IN THE STATE-LEVEL DISASTER PREPAREDNESS EXERCISE

AIIMS Raipur participated in the state-level disaster preparedness exercise for floods conducted by the State Revenue Department in consultation with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), with active participation from the State Health Department and various state and district agencies.

On 18 August, a tabletop exercise was conducted with participation from representatives of CISF, SDRF, Telecom, PWD, Electrical Departments, Army, Navy and other agencies. Dr. Naman Agrawal, AIIMS Raipur, presented the utility of the Government of India’s BHISHM Cube and outlined the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for its deployment during disasters.

On 20 August, a full-scale mock drill was conducted to simulate an actual flood disaster response. AIIMS Raipur, led by Dr. D. K. Tripathy, Mr. Prakash Sabani and the team, demonstrated the complete deployment and operationalisation of the BHISHM Cube in a field setting.

The BHISHM Cubes deployed by AIIMS Raipur have been provided through the Disaster Cell of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, with the necessary logistical support being facilitated to ensure their readiness and effective deployment during emergencies. This initiative strengthens the linkage between the national disaster-health response framework and state-level disaster preparedness.

The exercise provided an important platform to integrate the Government of India’s BHISHM Cube initiative with the state’s disaster management and health response framework, thereby strengthening preparedness and enhancing the capacity for rapid medical relief during floods and other major disasters.

The initiative received appreciation from Smt. Shammi Abidi, Revenue Secretary, Government of Chhattisgarh; Brigadier Ravinder Gurung, Senior Consultant, NDMA; and Dr. Smriti Dewangan, Depity Director, State Health Services. The leadership discussed a roadmap for future collaboration to further strengthen disaster preparedness and medical response capabilities across the state.

Looking ahead, AIIMS Raipur envisions a statewide capacity-building initiative to train doctors and first responders in the principles of Disaster Management in Health, including the effective deployment and utilisation of BHISHM Cubes. This will help create a trained, coordinated and resilient healthcare workforce capable of providing timely medical assistance during disasters.

The participation marks an important step towards building a coordinated, technology-enabled and rapid disaster medical response system for Chhattisgarh, linking national initiatives with state-level preparedness and response mechanisms.
