World Environment Day is a global event to make a commitment to learn more about the environment and demonstrate how you can help in protecting it. The theme of World Environment Day, 2023 is “Solutions To Plastic Pollution”. With this objective, Sarvadhar Eco Club GDC Ramban in collaboration with NSS unit and Pollution Control Committee District Ramban, under the aegis of G20 & AKAM and able guidance and supervision of Principal Government Degree College Ramban, Prof. Archana Kaul, organized series of events to celebrate World Environment Day, 2023.
At the onset, a poster making competition on the theme solutions to plastic pollution was organized in which about 15 Eco Club and NSS volunteers participated. The principal of the College Prof. Archana Kaul, welcomed the participants of the event and highlighted the importance of celebrating this day. She further elaborated that the main aim of this event is to raise awareness about the growing concerns of plastic pollution, overpopulation, loss of biodiversity and depleting quality of the environment. Dr. Vikram Rathore, Convenor, Eco Club and Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, GDC Ramban briefed the students about the theme of the competition and discussed the rules and regulations of the poster making competition. Prof Vickey Rattan Programme Officer, NSS also highlighted the importance of celebrating this day. Prof. Vijay Kumar, Prof Younis Ahmed, Dr. Vinod Kumar and Prof. Sameer were the jury members of the competition. All the posters were displayed before the jury members for the final results. Among the winners, Dhivya Devi, of B. A. semester IV bagged the first position, Anil Singh, of B. A. semester IV bagged the second position and Himani Sharma, of B. Sc. Semester IV bagged the third position. All the participants were given prizes at the end of the event.
The second session started with the awareness programme about the harmful effects of plastic waste. Mr. Sanjay Rathore, Assistant Environmental Engineer from the Pollution Control Committee, district Ramban was the resource person. Mr. Sanjay Rathore gave a detailed presentation about the current scenario of plastic waste generation, single use plastics, initiatives of pollution control committee in regulation of plastic waste and various legal provisions related to its management. He also distributed the cotton bags among the students as an alternative to plastic bags to raise awareness to not use plastic carry bags which are harmful to our environment. The programme concluded with mission life pledge by faculty, guest speakers, and Eco Club & NSS volunteers. The whole programme was coordinated by Dr. Vikram Rathore, Convener Sarvadhar Eco Club & Head Department of Environmental Sciences, GDC Ramban. The other faculty members present were Prof. Rajeev Kumar, Prof Bal Krishan, Dr. Bharat Singh, Prof. Kamaljeet Singh, Prof Younis Ahmed, Prof Ajaz Ahmed, Prof Neetu Sharma, Tilak Raj (PTI) and Prof. Vijaylakshmi.
