A five-day training course on “Machine Learning Techniques for Sustainable Water Resources Management”, organized by the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee, has been successfully completed during August 24–28, 2026. The training was attended by participants from various parts of the country, coming from diverse fields, representing various professions from Research students to Field Engineer and Faculty members.
The inauguration of the training was chaired by the Director, Dr. Y. R. Satyaji Rao, on August 24, 2026, with a brief overview of the course content by Dr. Sushindra Kumar Gupta, Sc-C & Coordinator followed by the remarks by Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Sc-G & Head, Ground Water Hydrology Division, other Scientists with a vote of thanks by Dr. Satendra Kumar, Sc-B & Co-coordinator.
The course featured a series of expert lectures and hands-on sessions conducted by distinguished NIH scientists and invited experts from other Institutes. The key topics covered were: fundamental concepts of machine learning and their hydrological applications, data preprocessing, feature selection, and time-series modeling, python programming and open data sources for ml applications, model development using supervised and unsupervised ml techniques, data visualization and explainable AI (XAI) applications, physics of soil and vadose zone modelling and prediction of model parameters using ml techniques, real-world case studies in soil moisture, scour depth & groundwater prediction, drought risk assessment, and water quality monitoring. As part of the program, visits to the Labs: Soil Water, Nuclear Hydrology, and Water Quality Laboratory were also organised providing the participants with practical exposure to different experimental techniques for the analysis and determination of various required parameters.
The training concluded with a valedictory session chaired by Director NIH on August 28, 2026. A summary of the training program was presented by the training Co-ordinator. Participants also shared their learning experiences and feedback, followed by the award of Training certificates, followed by remarks by the Head GWHD, and concluding address by the Director, NIH. The session was finally concluded with a vote of thanks by the Co-coordinator acknowledging the support of all dignitaries, management, administrative, technical staff and supporting staff for their tireless efforts for making all the necessary arrangements for the successful completion of the training program.
