The National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee successfully conducted a five-day training course on “Water Isotope Analysis (Oxygen-18, Deuterium and Tritium) and its Application in Water Resources Management” during 24–28 August 2026 for 2 research scholars of NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh, organized at their request. The course provided participants with theoretical and practical exposure to δ¹⁸O, δ²H and ³H analysis and their applications in groundwater recharge, flow, age determination, hydrological connectivity and sustainable water resources management. The training was coordinated by Dr. Gopal Krishan, Scientist-E, with Dr. S. D. Khobragade, Scientist-G & Head, HID, and Dr. Amit Pandey, Scientist-B, serving as Co-Course Coordinators. The programme provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange and capacity building in isotope hydrology and strengthened scientific interaction between NIH and NERIST.

A five-day training course on “Machine Learning Techniques for Sustainable Water Resources Management”, organized by the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee, has been successfully completed during August 24–28, 2026. The training was attended by participants from various parts of the country, coming from diverse fields, representing various professions from Research students to Field Engineer and Faculty members.

The inauguration of the training was chaired by the Director, Dr. Y. R. Satyaji Rao, on August 24, 2026, with a brief overview of the course content by Dr. Sushindra Kumar Gupta, Sc-C & Coordinator followed by the remarks by Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Sc-G & Head, Ground Water Hydrology Division, other Scientists with a vote of thanks by Dr. Satendra Kumar, Sc-B & Co-coordinator.

The course featured a series of expert lectures and hands-on sessions conducted by distinguished NIH scientists and invited experts from other Institutes. The key topics covered were: fundamental concepts of machine learning and their hydrological applications, data preprocessing, feature selection, and time-series modeling, python programming and open data sources for ml applications, model development using supervised and unsupervised ml techniques, data visualization and explainable AI (XAI) applications, physics of soil and vadose zone modelling and prediction of model parameters using ml techniques, real-world case studies in soil moisture, scour depth & groundwater prediction, drought risk assessment, and water quality monitoring. As part of the program, visits to the Labs: Soil Water, Nuclear Hydrology, and Water Quality Laboratory were also organised providing the participants with practical exposure to different experimental techniques for the analysis and determination of various required parameters.

The training concluded with a valedictory session chaired by Director NIH on August 28, 2026. A summary of the training program was presented by the training Co-ordinator. Participants also shared their learning experiences and feedback, followed by the award of Training certificates, followed by remarks by the Head GWHD, and concluding address by the Director, NIH. The session was finally concluded with a vote of thanks by the Co-coordinator acknowledging the support of all dignitaries, management, administrative, technical staff and supporting staff for their tireless efforts for making all the necessary arrangements for the successful completion of the training program.

This footage is from Jeremy Wade's Mighty Rivers, Episode One, which first aired on Animal Planet on 8 April 2018 and was filmed the year before. It has been re-uploaded and is now being shared as a picture of the Ganga today. It is not. What changed after 2018 is on the public record.

The tannery discharge at Jajmau, Kanpur is precisely what this particular video has documented. A dedicated 20 MLD Common Effluent Treatment Plant at Jajmau is today complete and operational, built specifically for tannery effluent that once reached the river untreated.

In 2017, the year this episode was filmed, Grossly Polluting Industries across the basin discharged a BOD load of 26 tonnes per day. By 2024, that stood at 10.75 tonnes per day, with effluent volume down almost 24 per cent, from 349 MLD to 265.56 MLD.

CPCB's own comparison of polluted river stretches between 2018 and 2025 records the same shift. The Haridwar to Sultanpur stretch in Uttarakhand, rated Priority IV in 2018, carries no polluted stretch designation today. West Bengal has moved from Priority III to Priority V.

On the film's central claim about vanishing fish, 192 lakh Indian Major Carp fingerlings have been ranched into the Ganga since 2017 through CIFRI, and the first countrywide assessment places the Gangetic dolphin population near 6,324, the largest share of it in the Ganga basin, especially in Uttar Pradesh. Predators return where prey returns.

A 2017 frame may document what the Ganga looked like then. It cannot be presented as evidence of what the Ganga looks like in 2026.

This video is misleading.
