Towards the north of Mahableshwar at about 5 km is the temple area also known as Old Mahableshwar. Next to the Mahableshwar temple is another temple called “Aatibaleshwar”. Next to this temple is the Panchganga temple. It is believed that the five rivers namely Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Gayatri and Savitri meet at this place. At the base of a high stone

wall, about 3 ft apart are the five holes through which the water flows. These are supposed to be the five rivers which after running for about 8-10 ft , unite and fall through the mouth of a carved stone cow into a cistern. Nearby in the vicinity is the temple of Lord Rama. Due to all these ancient temples Mahableshwar is believed to be one of the religious place of Hindus. The area is also called Brahma Aranya. The Mahalinga of lord Shiva is of Rudraksha shape and believed to be 'Self Bodied' (Swayanbhoo). It is called Trigunatmaka, meaning Brahma - Vishu - Mahesh are on it forever. On the head of the Mahalinga you see the marks of five holy rivers (Panchganga) and their waters never lose level.
