Background:
Our organisation ‘Shramik Janata Vikas sanstha (acronym SJVS) was founded by a group of local youth Mr. Adhinath Ombale from Jaoli block of Satara district who earlier worked with Shramjivi Janata Sahayak Mandal (SJSM) Satara as social workers where they took considerable experience of organising community around livelihood issues through cooperatives, addressing socio-economic issu
es of poor people and mobilising poor and needy for their basic rights. Since inception in 1994 we are operational in villages along the foothills of Sahyadri hills in Satara District. Creating awareness amongst the rural people about socio-economic development we have promoted 13 cooperative societies and CBOs amongst small and marginal farmers, women and landless Katkari tribals in the areas of dairy, credit cooperative, agriculture, fishing, and women’s industrial cooperative, etc. Over 450 SHGs have been promoted in 6 blocks of Satara district namely Jawali, Medha, Mahabaleshwar, Koregaon, Rahimatpur and Wai. With encouragement from Oxfam India office at Mumbai we have started operations in 50 villages/hamlets of Jawhar block in Thane district where we have promoted more than 150 SHGs amongst tribal women. Three fishing co-operative and one Eco tourism society ongoing registration processes Some of the poorest communities that we are working are Katkari, Dhangar Gavali & dalits in Satara district and Katkari, Warli, Thakar and Konkna tribals in Thane district alongside small and marginal land holders and women across all communities. Although Katkaris are chiefly located in neighbouring Raigad district, some of them have migrated to adjoining Satara and Thane districts in search of livelihood and have set up their houses in the forest areas. Due to relocation and in the absence of productive physical assets the community is very impoverished and exploited at the hands of non-tribals. While in Satara district they survive solely on daily wage labourers (agriculture, construction, bricks making) and fishing, in Thane district most of them have encroached forest lands to cultivate and earn their livelihood during the monsoon. For the remaining period they migrate and work as daily wage earners on construction sites, brick kilns, and agriculture farms or as annual contract workers with large farmers. Needless to mention all these works are done against the advances obtained by tribals for agriculture inputs during the monsoon, Mr. Adinath Omble had build up confidence to do something for development of social & economical growth of peoples situated at Jaoli & Mahableshwar areas. Due to this he was organized youths of same thinking and established organization named “Shramik Janata Vikas Sanstha” at 1987.
