25% chance of Thalassemia Major

Most people think blood disorders develop later in life.
But some begin even before a person is born.
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder where the body cannot make enough healthy hemoglobin, the part of blood that carries oxygen throughout the body.
Globally, an estimated 200+ million people carry thalassemia genes, and ~40,000 infants are born with severe Thalassemia Major every year…mostly in low- and middle-income countries.

In India alone, about 42 million people are β-thalassemia carriers, and 10,000–15,000 children are born with Thalassemia Major annually accounting for roughly 25% of the global burden.

For individuals with thalassemia with severe forms, life often involves regular blood transfusions every few weeks, lifelong iron chelation therapy, and ongoing medical care.
But here’s the part many people don’t realize:
Thalassemia isn’t something you “catch.”
It is genetic, often passed on by parents who appear perfectly healthy.
That’s why awareness and early testing matter so much.
Because sometimes the most powerful healthcare intervention isn’t treatment.
It’s knowledge that lets us act before it becomes life-long.
