Along with the Imphal Peace Museum, we are happy and proud to present the visual exhibition, 'Remembering in Peace.'

This exhibition foregrounds a significant body of Japanese objects and materials preserved at the Imphal Peace Museum, bringing into view archival fragments that speak to memory, loss and reconciliation across borders. Drawing from photographs, personal effects, postcards, paintings, currency, cartography and artefact documentation associated with Japanese soldiers and civilians, the exhibition repositions these materials not as distant historical artefacts, but as intimate carriers of lived experience during the battles of Imphal and Kohima in 1944.

It would be lovely if you can spare your precious time to drop in and take a look at the exhibits!

The Northeast India AV Archive with support from the Sasakawa Peace Foundation is proud to present the launch of 'From Shillong to Saigon: Market Places as Crossroads of Culture' on the 21st of November, 2025 at 9:45 am at the Shillong Literary Festival.

'From Shillong to Saigon: Marketplaces as Crossroads of Culture' gathers essays that explore the cultural, social and economic significance of markets across Northeast India and Southeast Asia. Together, these accounts reveal markets as places where identities are shaped, gender roles negotiated and bonds of solidarity renewed.

In Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, local markets preserve tradition while adapting to shifting economies. Across Southeast Asia, from Thailand to Cambodia and Vietnam, markets embody the same blend of commerce and culture, continuity and transformation. As living theatres of exchange and encounter, markets illuminate resilience, nurture coexistence and remind us of the delicate balance between conflict and harmony.

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage - 27 October - is key initiative for both UNESCO and the Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA) to honor audiovisual preservation professionals and institutions that safeguard our heritage for future generations. Around the world audiovisual archives join together annually on this day to celebrate their work with events that not only highlight the vulnerability of these valuable materials, but also to celebrate the often, unheralded work of the institutions that provide protection and preservation, ensuring their availability in the future.

Genesis

Despite North East India’s rich audio visual legacy, there is no true audiovisual archive, or at least not one that has been adequately developed. Personal collectors may have important archival pieces, but access to them is limited. The idea of setting up a audiovisual archive stems from present concerns related to the dissemination of different types of image, their role in making history by proponents of various truths, and the fragility of the medium itself.

Some of the concerns that lead to the need of the archive include:

Can the audio visual image lend itself to a deeper, more intricate understanding of our society’s mood, or chart shifts in perspective? Can it fully encapsulate a singular moment? And how can archive facilitate an activation of memories that have long been forgotten or are in process of being forgotten?

Audio-Visual archives, especially the non-profit public archives, came into being because archivists, curators and historians accepted that moving image and recorded sound material were as legitimate a part of society’s cultural heritage as books, documents and other media. We believe that there is a need to build a participatory archive engaging with the ‘moving’ image’s role in capturing moments of social change and periods of transition, in turn influencing the formation of public opinion and a sense of history. There are hundreds of archives, libraries, universities, television stations and individuals across the world that collect and store moving images and recorded sound. The archives are significant repositories of a country’s legacy, a means of collecting knowledge and documenting history.
