The Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner, Shri Sampath Kumar, IAS, Government of Meghalaya, visited Mawdiangdiang and Diengpasoh, East Khasi Hills, to review key human development initiatives under the Human Development Leadership Programme (HDLP). The visit brought together community members, frontline workers, Self Help Groups (SHGs), Village Organisations (VOs), Village Health Councils (VHCs), and health officials to strengthen coordination between communities and the health system.
The visit began with an interactive Life Cycle session at the Anganwadi Centre in Mawdiangdiang, where discussions focused on early childhood brain development, exclusive breastfeeding, child nutrition, birth spacing, and the importance of investing in children from pregnancy through adulthood. Through participatory discussions, community members reflected on the shared responsibility of families and communities in supporting healthy child development.
During HDLP household visits, families shared how sustained counselling by ASHAs, health workers, and doctors helped address misconceptions around immunisation and build confidence in the health system. Conversations also highlighted the importance of birth spacing, shared parenting responsibilities, regular attendance at Anganwadi Centres, and women's participation in Self Help Groups.
At Diengpasoh PHC, the Additional Chief Secretary inspected the health facility and chaired a sector review meeting on maternal and child health indicators, institutional deliveries, antenatal care, immunisation, anaemia, maternal and infant deaths, and first trimester ANC registration. Discussions also focused on strengthening collaboration with Traditional Birth Attendants, improving counselling for pregnant women and families, increasing male participation in family health, and reinforcing the implementation of the Chief Minister's Safe Motherhood Scheme (CMSMS).
The visit concluded with a meeting of Village Organisations and Village Health Councils, where discussions focused on improving awareness of government schemes, strengthening coordination between communities and health facilities, sustaining Vulnerability Reduction Funds, and supporting vulnerable families through community-led initiatives. The meeting reinforced the important role of local institutions in improving health outcomes and ensuring timely access to care.
