Snapshots from the One day sensitisation program on Prevention of Wildlife Crime and the Role of Local Community Members conducted by the Khasi Hills Wildlife Division of the Forest & Environment Department in co-ordination with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and AARANYAK.

Wildlife Crime and illegal Wildlife trade leads to species extinction, disrupts the ecological equilibrium and is also a serious national security issue.
Our North Eastern region is extremely rich in wildlife and at the same time a transit route for illegal wildlife trade to South East Asian countries. This workshop hence aims to sensitize and raise awareness amoung the communities on the issue of illegal trade of wildlife products with an aim to curb the same and to raise our vigil in safeguarding our precious wildlife.

Wetlands of Meghalaya: Umiam Lake
Umiam Lake is an important land mark which we all can connect with. Those of us who have travelled from Guwahati side to Shillong Side along the Guwahati-Shillong NH must have at least once stopped there to take a picture of this beautiful Barapani Umiam Lake.
Umiam has entered into the Wetland List of India Portal and with it efforts are being taken for its conservation as well as to maintain the integrity of this wetland. A series of week-long awareness programmes and clean-up activities were taken up from Oct 4 2021 involving various stakeholders.
Lets together ensure that Barapani Umiam Lake remains a beautiful picture perfect land mark with respect to its natural beauty and ecological significance.
