Late post: The Tibetan community in Shillong joyfully celebrated the 91st birthday of His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama with a two-day event at Gaden Choeling Monastery, Upper Lumparing. On 6th July, the official birthday was marked with grandeur, featuring vibrant traditional Tibetan cultural performances by students of Sambhota Tibetan School and members of the Tibetan community. The celebration was further honoured by the presence of the Chief Guest, Shri Sanbor Shullai Ji, Honourable Cabinet Minister, Government of Meghalaya and other dignitaries.

On 7th July, the second day of the celebration commenced with a prayer session that lasted until 1:30 pm. This session was held to honor the profound sacrifice of Lobga Rangzen, also known as Lobsang Palden, who self-immolated in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York City on 2nd July, 2026, for the cause of Tibet. Following the prayer session, the celebration continued as scheduled until late in the evening.

On June 10, 2026, as a part of the year-long celebration of the “Year of Compassion” honoring the 90th birth anniversary of His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama, the Regional Ghoton Celebration Committee of Shillong organised the display of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s photograph along with inspirational quotes on the Advertising Screen at Police Bazar, Main Point, Shillong.

The 30-second promotional content will be continuously displayed for one week, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, on the Police Bazar Advertising Screen. Through this initiative, the committee aims to share His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s profound message of universal responsibility, love, compassion, peace, and the promotion of human values to a larger number of people.

During the event, committee members distributed laddus (Indian sweet balls), drinking water, juice, and informational flyers to both local residents and tourists. The initiative received an overwhelmingly positive response, with many expressing deep appreciation for promoting His Holiness universal message benefiting humanity.

May 17, 2026: With the commencement of the most sacred Buddhist month, Saga Dawa—often referred to as the “Triple Blessed Festival” marking the Birth, Enlightenment, and Parinirvana of Gautama Buddha—the Tibetan community of Shillong begins its annual Chi-Rim and Dolma Bhum-Ther mass public prayer. These prayers will be held daily from 6–9 am throughout the Saga Dawa month at the Tibetan Community Hall.

The objectives of offering mass public prayers during this auspicious month are to accumulate good karma and purify past misdeeds, all with the intention of benefiting every sentient-being and praying for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The prayer is organized every year under the supervision of the Community Leader (Chi-Mi) and supported by the active participation of the general public.

This year, the Saga Dawa mass prayer takes on added significance as Tibetans around the globe are observing the Year of Compassion in honor of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday. To mark this significant event, the regional Ghoton Committee members have released 2,000 small fish into Umiam Lake in Shillong, saving them from slaughter.

Shillong, April 22, 2026: As a part of yearlong observance of the “Year of Compassion”, honouring the 90th birth anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Community in Shillong organized a Tree Plantation drive coinciding with International Mother Earth Day. A total of 113 sapling consisting of Gold crest pine, Cherry blossom & Rhododendron were planted within the area of Gaden Choeling Buddhist Monastery, Upper Shillong. During the plantation, a response from the Tibetan general public was overwhelming with active participation of large number of Tibetans reflecting the community’s shared values, unity and collective responsibility for preserving the environment for long time survival of all living creature.

On January 26, 2025 Tibetan Settlement Office Shillong organized Tibetan Medicare System (TMS) awareness program to the residents of Shillong at Tibetan Community Hall. During the event, Settlement Officer emphasized the importance of enrolment in TMS program within stipulated period, Health benefit & contribution, Medical coverage; and most significantly, the nature of TMS being non-profit health plan that aims to improve public health and well-being of the Tibetan community in-exile.

As part of the year long observance of the “Year of Compassion,” honouring the 90th birth anniversary of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the Regional Ghoton Organizing Committee Shillong carried out monthly social welfare initiatives by providing dry ration, toiletries products, house cleaning tools and cash donation made towards Asha Bhawan, a registered NGO for drug rehabilitation Centre based in Nongpdeng Shillong where free residential program offered aiming to overcome individuals from Alcohol & Substance abuse thus by restoring normal life free from addiction.
