SFI Central Executive Committee strongly condemns the horrific incident in Jamui, Bihar, where two Class 10 students were stopped on a public road, assaulted, humiliated and sexually harassed by a group of men on September 19. Under the BJP-led government in Bihar, this horrific incident once again raises grave questions about the safety of women and girls in the state and the government’s responsibility to ensure that they can move freely and safely in public spaces.
SFI demands the immediate identification and arrest of every person involved in the assault. The police have registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the BNS and the POCSO Act, constituted an SIT, and arrested three accused so far. However, all those involved must be identified through the available video and other evidence and brought before the law without delay. We also demand immediate arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators under the POCSO Act and all other relevant laws; a time-bound, impartial investigation by the SIT, with the progress of the investigation made publicly accountable; full protection, privacy and psychosocial support for the survivors and their families; strict action against anyone found to have obstructed the investigation or attempted to shield the perpetrators; immediate steps to prevent the further circulation of videos identifying the minor survivors. Police have already initiated takedown action against accounts circulating the footage; accountability from the Bihar government for the broader failures that allow such violence against women and children to take place in public spaces.
SFI stands firmly with the survivors and their families. The Bihar government must act, not merely issue statements after videos of violence become public. Justice for the survivors and punishments for every perpetrator must be ensured.
