Resist draconian step of Visva Bharati Vice-chancellor
Date: 25.12.22
Since the past few days we are witnesssing authoritarianism within the Visvabharati University campus. University authority is forcefully attempting to end the peaceful movement carried on by students over just and rightful claims. Despite the Court's approval, one of the protesting student (Somnath Sou) is not allowed admission. With support from the VC, Visvabharati’s Proctor’s office served notices to six students and suspended them for one year for protesting against the University authority. Even professors protesting in solidarity with the movement are suspended on orders of the VC. This esteemed university has been virtually turned into a ground for the VC' s arbitrariness. Such sorts of anti-student and anti-teacher stances have pushed the students towards a bleak future. Amid these turmoils in the university, its rank has been relegated from its earlier 11th position (2015 -16) to an all-time low of 98th among Indian universities in a recent survey.
Therefore we stronly demand immediate revocation of suspension of the six students and the professors alongwith admission of the protesting student Somnath Sou without any further delay for the sake of Visvabharati University. The VC has even been fined by the court for overstepping his limits and has earned many reprieves from the court. Within a security cordon provided by private musclemen, he is adhering to tactics and politics that is uncommon in academia. Such an ill choice has been deliberately made by the RSS-inspired bigwigs and they aim to destroy the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. So, we demand resignation of the autocratic Vice-chancellor. We earnestly request the common people to raise their voice and unanimously stand in solidarity with the student movement in the interest of Tagore's Visvabharati.
