കേരള വാട്ടർ അതോറിറ്റി 1984 ഏപ്രിൽ 1 ന് സംസ്ഥാന സർക്കാരിനു കീഴിലെ ഒരു സ്വയം ഭരണ സ്ഥാപനമായി പ്രവർത്തനം ആരംഭിച്ചു.
ജല വിതരണത്തിനും മലിനജല സംഭരണത്തിനും നിർമാർജനത്തിനുമായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്ന പബ്ലിക് ഹെൽത്ത് എന്ജിനീയറിംഗ് ആണ് പിന്നീട് KWA ആയി മാറിയത് .ജല വിതരണത്തിനും മലിനജല സംഭരണത്തിനും നിർമ്മാർജനതിനു മുള്ള പദ്ധതികളുടെ ആസൂത്രണം, നിർമാണം , നിർവഹണം , നിലനിർതൽ എന്നീ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾക്കായി നില കൊള്ളുന്ന

വാട്ടർ അതോറിറ്റിയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനം തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ വെള്ളയമ്പലം ആണ് .ജല വിതരണത്തിനും മറ്റു സേവനങ്ങൾക്കും ആവശ്യമായ മാനദണ്ടങ്ങൾ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതും അടിയന്തിര സമയങ്ങളിൽ ജല ലഭ്യത ഉറപ്പു വരുത്താനാവശ്യമായ നടപടികൾ കൈക്കൊള്ളുന്നതും KWA ആണ്.
