Centre of Excellence in Microbiome CoEM is an initiative of the Govt. of Kerala under the aegises of KSCSTE, K-DISC and scientific mentoring of BRIC-RGCB.

The Centre of Excellence in Microbiome (CoEM) is an institute to catalyse microbiome-based research, product development and promote entrepreneurship for a sustainable future on a One Health perspective. The goal of the institute is to promote microbiome-based research, product development, and support entrepreneurship.

The Centre of Excellence in Microbiome , in association with Iqraa Hospital, Kozhikode, successfully conducted an Awareness Drive on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) under an ICMR-supported project, bringing together healthcare professionals, academicians, students, and the public to address one of the most pressing global health challenges. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Sabu Thomas, Director, CoEM, who highlighted the urgent need for responsible antibiotic use and the critical role of the human microbiome in combating antimicrobial resistance.

World Microbiome Day 2026 – Be-Biome: Exploring the Science of the Human Microbiome
The scientific sessions were enriched by insightful lectures from distinguished experts: Dr. Abdulla Mohamed Hatha (Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Dr. Ramadass Balamurugan (CCMR, AIIMS Bhubaneswar), Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips (Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva), Dr.Dilip Abraham (CMC Vellore), and Dr. Bipin Nair (Amrita School of Biotechnology, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham). Their inspiring presentations showcased the latest advances in microbiome science, highlighting its diverse environmental, clinical, translational, and therapeutic applications.

We were delighted to jointly organize World Microbiome Day Observance 2026 – Be-Biome: Exploring the Science of the Human Microbiome in collaboration with Central Research Laboratory - Research BMCH Believers Church Medical College Hospital.

The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Anjali Anne Varghese, followed by an introduction to the programme by Dr. Sabu Thomas , who highlighted the significance of World Microbiome Day and the need for microbiome research and product development in the state. In his presidential address, Dr. George M Chandy Matteethra emphasized the importance of integrating microbiome research into modern medicine.
The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Prof. Govindapillai Mohanadasan Nair, who highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between researchers and clinicians and emphasized the relevance of declaring a State Microbe. Dr. Samuel Chittaranjan delivered the felicitation address on healthy eating habits and preserving beneficial microbes for better health. Prizes for agar art and reel competition were distributed. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Cleetus Cherupanakkal.
The event continued with scientific sessions by experts and oral presentations, providing a platform for sharing recent advances and fostering collaborations in microbiome research.
