V. D. Satheesan has been announced by the Congress as the Chief Minister-designate of Kerala after the UDF’s 2026 election victory. Reports say the party ended a 10-day internal suspense and picked him over KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala.

He is a six-time MLA from Paravur and was earlier the Leader of the Opposition in Kerala. Coverage also notes that Congress allies such as IUML backed him strongly for the top post.

The announcement came on 14 May 2026, and several news outlets and party-related posts described him as the next Chief Minister of Kerala.

Chandy Oommen is an Indian lawyer and politician from Kerala, and the son of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He is a Congress leader who represents the Puthuppally constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

He was born on 1 March 1986 in Puthuppally, Kottayam, and is an advocate who has practiced before the Supreme Court of India since 2016. He also worked as a lecturer and served as Chairman of the National Outreach Cell of the Indian Youth Congress.

Chandy Oommen entered electoral politics in the 2023 Puthuppally bypoll and won with a record margin of 37,719 votes. The Kerala Assembly profile also lists him as the elected MLA from Puthuppally for the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly.

He is the only son of Oommen Chandy and Mariamma Oommen, and has two sisters, Maria and Achu Oommen.

V. D. Satheesan is a senior Indian National Congress leader from Kerala and the current Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He represents the Paravur constituency and has been an MLA since 2001.

His full name is Vadassery Damodaran Satheesan, born on 31 May 1964 in Nettoor, Kerala. He is a lawyer by profession and has also served in party roles such as vice president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.

He succeeded Ramesh Chennithala as Leader of the Opposition after the 2021 Kerala election. The sources also indicate he led the UDF to a major victory in the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly election.
