Sree Narayana Guru on Purity and Human Dignity

In a conversation held in 1927, Sree Narayana Guru spoke about physical cleanliness in these words: “If bodily purity is maintained, purity in food, purity in thoughts, and every other form of purity will arise from it. If that is achieved, a person can achieve everything. Then no one will ask who he is. In such a society, all those who bathe and keep themselves clean should come together, and those who do not maintain cleanliness should not be encouraged into close association.”

1927 -ൽ ഗുരു നടത്തിയ ഒരു സംഭാഷണത്തിൽ ദേഹശുദ്ധിയെപ്പറ്റി ഇങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞു:- "കായശുദ്ധി ഉണ്ടായാൽ, ആഹാര ശുദ്ധിയും ഭാവശുദ്ധിയും എല്ലാ ശുദ്ധിയും അതിൽ നിന്നുണ്ടാകും. അതു സാധിച്ചാൽ മനുഷ്യന് എല്ലാം സാധിക്കും. പിന്നെ ആരെന്ന് അവനോട് ആരും ചോദിക്കുകയില്ല. ഇങ്ങനെയായാൽ കുളിക്കുന്നവരൊക്കെ ഒന്നിച്ചു ചേരണം. കുളിക്കാത്തവരെ അടുപ്പിക്കരുത്".

The Most Blessed Moment of My Life”: Sudhakaran Remembers Kumaranashan Bowing at Gurudevan’s Feet

Let us hear the words of Kumaranashan's eldest son, Sudhakaran, about the occasion when Gurudevan visited Ashan's residence while staying at Thonnakkal. 'When Swami Thrippadangal (Sree Narayana Guru) was leaving to return to Varkala , I was fortunate enough to witness my father touch Swami’s feet in reverence. The color of Swami's feet was like that of a lotus flower. Until that day, I had never seen my father bow his head to anyone. I consider that moment to be the most blessed one of my life".

തോന്നയ്ക്കൽ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് കുമാരനാശാന്‍റെ വസതിയിൽ ഗുരുദേവൻ സന്ദർശിക്കാൻ എത്തിയ സന്ദർഭത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ആശാന്‍റെ മൂത്ത പുത്രൻ സുധാകരന്‍റെ വാക്കുകൾ നമുക്കൊന്ന് കേൾക്കാം. "സ്വാമി തൃപ്പാദങ്ങൾ അവിടെ നിന്നു തിരിച്ചു വർക്കലയ്ക്കു പോകുന്നതിന് വില്ലുവണ്ടിയിൽ യാത്ര പുറപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ അച്ഛൻ സ്വാമിയുടെ കാല് തൊട്ട് തൊഴുന്നത് കാണാൻ എനിയ്ക്ക് ഭാഗ്യമുണ്ടായി. സ്വാമിയുടെ പാദത്തിന്‍റെ നിറം താമരപ്പൂവിനോടൊത്തതായിരുന്നു. അന്നോളം ഒരിക്കലും അച്ഛന്‍റെ തല കുനിഞ്ഞു ഞാൻ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. എന്‍റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഭാഗ്യമുള്ള നിമിഷമാണ് അതെന്ന് ഞാൻ കരുതുന്നു."

Kumaranashan’s First Encounter with the Bicycle — A Poetic Reflection

On 13 July 1913, Kumaranashan made a brief note in his diary about learning to ride a bicycle: “Began to practice cycling.” Around the same period, he also wrote a verse about the bicycle in his notebook, without recording the date, capturing his impressions in poetic form:

"Athirasamaayadoshamayum
Ksh*tiyithilingane vahanangalundo
Athulajavomodepozhum gamippaan
Chathurathayaarna chavittuvandipole!"

At that time in Travancore, the bicycle (chavittuvandi) was a vehicle that evoked great curiosity and excitement among onlookers. Ashan, whose eyes had marveled with poetic delight, viewed the bicycle with equal fascination and wonder. The poem, left untitled and incomplete, reflects this marvel: a mix of extraordinary sensation, perfection , and exhilaration, without any flaw—an elegant journey through speed, as perceived by the poet’s gaze.This was arguably the first instance in Malayalam literature where the bicycle received such poetic praise, yet it remained a fleeting acknowledgment, never fully formalized into a celebrated work.

താന്‍ സൈക്കിള്‍ ചവിട്ടാന്‍ പരിശീലിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് കുമാരനാശാന്റെ ഡയറിയില്‍ 1913 ജൂലായ് 13-ന് ഒറ്റവരിയില്‍ ഒരു പരാമര്‍ശമുണ്ട്: 'ബിഗാന്‍ റ്റു പ്രാക്റ്റീസ് സൈക്ലിങ്' എന്നാണത്. സൈക്കിള്‍ ചവിട്ടാന്‍ പരിശീലിച്ച ആ നാളുകളില്‍ ആശാന്‍ കൂടെക്കൊണ്ടുനടന്ന നോട്ടുബുക്കിലാണ് തീയതി രേഖപ്പെടുത്താതെ സൈക്കിളിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ശ്ലോകം എഴുതിയിട്ടത്. ഇങ്ങനെയാണത്:

"അതിരസമായദോഷമായും
ക്ഷിതിയിതിലിങ്ങനെ വാഹനങ്ങളുണ്ടോ
അതുലജവമൊടെപ്പൊഴും ഗമിപ്പാന്‍
ചതുരതയാര്‍ന്ന ചവിട്ടുവണ്ടിപോലെ!"

കാഴ്ചക്കാരില്‍ അതികൗതുകംനിറയ്ക്കുന്ന വാഹനമായിരുന്നു തിരുവിതാംകൂറില്‍ അന്ന് ചവിട്ടുവണ്ടി എന്ന ബൈസിക്കിള്‍. തിരുവിതാംകൂറില്‍ അദ്ഭുതമായിത്തീര്‍ന്ന സിംഹത്തെയും കപോതപുഷ്പത്തെയും കാവ്യോചിതമായ കൗതുകത്തോടെക്കണ്ട ആശാന്റെ കണ്ണുകള്‍ സൈക്കിളിനെയും ഉദാരമായി കടാക്ഷിച്ചതിന്റെ ഫലമാണ് ശീര്‍ഷകംപോലും കൊടുക്കാതെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചുകളഞ്ഞ ആ കവിത. അതിരസം, അദോഷം, അതുലജവം: രസമേറെ, ദോഷമൊന്നുമില്ല, നല്ല വേഗവും-മഹാകവിയുടെ ദൃഷ്ടിയിലെ സൈക്കിള്‍യാത്രയായി. മലയാളത്തില്‍ ചവിട്ടുവണ്ടിക്കു ലഭിച്ച ആ പ്രഥമ പ്രശംസ ചിരസ്ഥായിയായിത്തീരാതിരുന്നതിനു കാരണമെന്താണാവോ!

True Faith Comes from Understanding: Kumaranashan's Response to Religious Conversion

Kumaranashan held a clear and firm view regarding religious conversion. He observed that in every community, those who truly understood religion were few, while the ignorant were many. According to Ashan, Christian missionaries often took advantage of this lack of genuine religious understanding to carry out conversions with ease. At the same time, he openly expressed his deep faith in and admiration for Hinduism. In a 1909 article published in Vivekodayam, Ashan wrote: “We now live in a time when we recognize and appreciate the strength of community. Therefore, we cannot afford to neglect the practice of people converting away from their own faith. There are many examples of entire families, local groups, and organizations embracing Christianity together. Such a tendency is visibly growing among the people. In any case, it is certain that no one would dare to change religion if they possessed a true understanding of our own faith. All who have understood it have admitted that there is no religion in the world equal to Hinduism in its universality, greatness, and ability to provide comfort and hope alike to the learned and unlearned, the rich and poor, the happy and sorrowful. Therefore, for the protection of the community, it is essential to make people understand the principles of religion. Merely constructing temples wherever needed will not accomplish this task, because only those who already have faith visit temples. True faith must arise from knowledge. Therefore, we must go to those who lack understanding and teach them the sacred principles of religion. We must create the necessary systems and institutions for that purpose.” This passage reflects Ashan’s belief that social and spiritual reform should come through education, awareness, and deeper understanding of religious philosophy rather than through blind custom or ritual alone.

മത പരിവർത്തനത്തെ പറ്റിയുള്ള കുമാരനാശാന്‍റെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാട് വ്യക്തവും ദൃഢവുമായിരുന്നു. എല്ലാ സമുദായത്തിലും മൂഢന്മാർ അധികവും മതത്തെപ്പറ്റി വാസ്തവമായ അറിവുള്ളവർ ചുരുക്കവുമാണെന്നും അതുമുതലെടുത്താണ് ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികൾ എളുപ്പത്തിൽ മതപരിവർത്തനം നടത്തുന്നന്നത് എന്നുമായിരുന്നു ആശാന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണം. ഹിന്ദുമതത്തിലുള്ള തന്റെ ദൃഢാഭിമാനവും വിശ്വാസവും ആശാൻ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. 1909-ലെ ഒരു വിവേകോദയം ലേഖനത്തിൽ ആശാൻ എഴുതിയത് ഇങ്ങനെ: " നാം ഇപ്പോൾ സമുദായ ബലത്തെ അറിയുകയും അതിനെ അഭിനന്ദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന കാലമാകുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് സ്വജനങ്ങളുടെ ഇടയിലുള്ള മതം മാറുന്ന ശീലത്തെ തടയുന്നതിൽ അല്പമെങ്കിലും ഉപേക്ഷ വിചാരിപ്പാൻ പാടില്ലാത്തതാണ്. ചില തറവാടുകളും ചില കരകളും സംഘങ്ങളും ഒന്നായിത്തന്നെ ക്രിസ്തുമതം സ്വീകരിച്ചതായി എത്രയോ ദൃഷ്ടാന്തങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. ആ വാസന ജനങ്ങളിൽ ബലമായി കണ്ടുവരികയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. ഏതായാലും നമ്മുടെ മതത്തെപ്പറ്റി വിവരമായ അറിവുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ ഒരുത്തനും മതം മാറാൻ ധൈര്യപ്പെടുകയില്ലെന്നുള്ളത് നിശ്ചയമാണ്. വിദ്വാന്മാർക്കും അവിദ്വാന്മാർക്കും ധനവാന്മാർക്കും ദരിദ്രന്മാർക്കും സുഖികൾക്കും ദു:ഖികൾക്കും ഒരുപോലെ ആശ്വാസത്തെയും ആശയെയും ജനിപ്പിക്കത്തക്കവണ്ണം സർവ്വതോന്മുഖമായ വ്യാപ്തിയും മാഹാത്മ്യവും ഉള്ള മതം ഹിന്ദുമതത്തെ പോലെ മറ്റൊന്ന് ലോകത്തിൽ ഇല്ലെന്നുള്ളത് അറിഞ്ഞവരെല്ലാം സമ്മതിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതാകുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് സമുദായ രക്ഷയെ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ച് മതതത്വത്തെ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തേണ്ടത് അത്യാവശ്യമാകുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളെ ആവശ്യമുള്ള ദിക്കുകളിൽ ഒക്കെ സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു മാത്രം ഈ കാര്യം പൂർത്തിയാകുന്നതല്ല. ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ വിശ്വാസമുള്ളവർ മാത്രമേ പോകാറുള്ളൂ. വാസ്തവമായ വിശ്വാസം അറിവിൽ നിന്ന് വേണം ഉണ്ടാവാൻ. അതുകൊണ്ടു അറിവില്ലാത്തവർക്ക് അവരുടെ അടുക്കൽ പോയി പരിശുദ്ധമായ മത തത്വങ്ങളെ ഉപദേശിക്കണം. അതിനുവേണ്ട വ്യവസ്ഥകൾ നാം ഉണ്ടാക്കണം"....

Kumaranashan — The Karma Yogi Who Dedicated His Life to Sree Narayana Guru and the S.N.D.P. Yogam

In the epic history of Indian culture, it is impossible to fully describe in words the selfless works of Kumaranashan, the Karma Yogi who, at the age of thirty, assumed office as the first General Secretary of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, the spiritual movement whose sacred lamp was lit by the divine hands of Bhagavan Sree Narayana Guru. For sixteen long years, he rendered tireless and selfless service to the Yogam. Likewise, how can one adequately describe the invaluable service he rendered for more than thirteen years, from 1904 (1079 Medam 1) to 1917, as the editor of Vivekodayam, the bi-monthly journal that served as the voice of the Yogam? As the very life-force of Vivekodayam, Ashan worked relentlessly to spread the sacred teachings and instructions of Bhagavan Guru among the members of the community, to reform society, to oppose primitive modes of worship and meaningless customs, to bring the issue of school admission for the oppressed communities before the government, and to fight like a warhorse for the rights of the avarna communities. Today, throughout Kerala, numerous organizations have arisen in the holy places sanctified by the divine footsteps of Bhagavan Guru. Yet, when one traces the roots of many of these institutions, they ultimately lead to the feet of Guru’s beloved Kumaru, who rests eternally on the shores of Pallana. As long as the sacred name of Guru continues to resonate across the earth, devotees of Guru will never forget the Mahakavi. How can one forget Kumaru, who illuminated the divine form of Guru through the light of his writings and spiritual experience? Through the Gurustavam, which echoes as an offering and prayer in countless homes and hearts, Kumaranashan revealed to future generations, beyond all doubt, who Guru truly was. In 1916, giving profound meaning to the great declaration “Guru is the visible God,” he observed a forty-one-day vow and consecrated the world’s first temple dedicated to Guru at the Kolathukara Shiva Temple in Kulathoor village of Thiruvananthapuram district. Although Bhagavan Guru had countless great monastic and household disciples, the rare spiritual fortune of performing such a consecration was bestowed upon Ashan alone, by the merit of countless virtuous deeds accumulated over many births.

ഭാരത സംസ്കൃതിയുടെ ഇതിഹാസത്തിൽ ഭഗവാൻ ശ്രീനാരായണ പരമഹംസന്റെ തൃക്കരങ്ങളാൽ തിരി തെളിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ട ആധ്യാത്മചൈതന്യമായ ശ്രീനാരായണ ധർമ്മ പരിപാലന യോഗത്തിന്റെ പ്രഥമ ജനറൽ സെക്രട്ടറിയായി 30- താമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ സ്ഥാനമേറ്റുകൊണ്ട് 16 വർക്കാലം നിസ്വാർത്ഥ സേവനം നടത്തിയ കർമ്മയോഗിയായ ആശാന്റെ പ്രവർത്തികളെ വാക്കുകളാൽ വർണ്ണിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കില്ല. യോഗത്തിന്‍റെ നാവായ വിവേകോദയം ദ്വിമാസാന്തപുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ പത്രാധിപരെന്നനിലയിൽ നിണ്ട പതിമൂന്നിൽ പരം വർഷങ്ങൾ (1904 (1079 മേടം 1 തീയതി) ( മുതൽ 1917) ചെയ്തനിസ്വാർത്ഥ സേവനങ്ങൾ എങ്ങിനെ വർണ്ണിക്കുവാൻ സാധിക്കും. ഭഗവാന്‍റെ തിരുവചനങ്ങളും, അവിടുത്തെ നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങളും സമുധായ അംഗങ്ങളിൽ എത്തിയ്ക്കുക, സമുധായത്തെ നവീകരിക്കുക, പ്രാകൃതമായ ആരാധന രീതികളെയും നിരർത്ഥകമായ ആചാരങ്ങളെയും എതിർക്കുക, സമുധായത്തിന്റെ സ്കൂൾ പ്രവേശന പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ സർക്കാരിന്റെ മുന്നിലേയ്ക്ക് എത്തിക്കുവാൻ വേണ്ടിഅ,വർണ്ണരുടെ അവകാശങ്ങൾക്കു വേണ്ടി ഒരു പടക്കുതിരയെപ്പോലെ പോരാടിയ വിവേകോദയത്തിന്റെ ജീവൻ ആശാനായിരുന്നു.ഇന്ന് കേരളക്കരയിൽ ഭഗവാന്റെ ദിവ്യപാദ പത്മങ്ങൾ പതിഞ്ഞ പുണ്യഭൂമികകളിലോക്കെയും അവിടുത്തെ തിരുനാമത്തിൽ അനവധി നിരവധി സംഘടനകൾ രൂപം കൊണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട് അതിൽ പലതിന്റെയും വേരുകൾ തേടി ചെല്ലുമ്പോൾ പല്ലനയുടെ തീരത്ത് അന്ത്യവിശ്രമം കൊള്ളുന്ന ഭഗവാന്റെ കുമാരുവിന്റെ പാദങ്ങളിൽ എത്തി നിൽക്കും. ഗുരുവിന്റെ തിരുനാമം ഭൂമിയിൽ മുഴങ്ങിക്കേൾക്കുന്ന കാലം വരെയും മഹാകവിയെയും ഗുരുഭക്തർ മറക്കില്ല. ഗുരുവിന്റെ തിരുസ്വരൂപത്തെ അക്ഷരങ്ങളിലൂടെ അനുഭവത്തിന്റെ വെളിച്ചത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് പകർന്നു നൽകിയ കുമാരുവിനെ എങ്ങിനെ മറക്കാൻ സാധിക്കും. അനേക ലക്ഷംഭവനങ്ങളിലും ഹൃദയങ്ങളിലും അർച്ചനയായും ആരാധനയ്ക്കും മുഴങ്ങിക്കേൾക്കുന്ന ഗുരുസ്തവത്തിലൂടെ ഗുരു ആരായിരുന്നു എന്ന് സംശയലേശമന്യേ വരുവാൻ പോവുന്ന തലമുറയ്ക്ക് കാട്ടികൊടുത്തു. (1916) ഗുരുപ്രത്യക്ഷ ദൈവതമെന്ന മഹാവാക്യത്തെ അന്വർത്ഥമാക്കി തിരുവനന്തപുരം ജില്ലയിലെ കുളത്തൂർഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന കോലത്തു കര ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ 1916 ൽ 41 ദിവസത്തെ വൃതം എടുത്തു കൊണ്ട് ലോകത്തിലെ ആദ്യ ഗുരുദേവക്ഷേത്രം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു. ഭഗവാനു അതിമഹത്തായ സംന്യാസ, ഗൃഹസ്ഥ ശിഷ്യ സമ്പത്തുണ്ടായിരുന്നിട്ടും പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തുവാൻ ജന്മജമ്മാന്തരങ്ങൾ ചെയ്ത പുണ്യത്താൽ ഭാഗ്യം ലഭിച്ചത് ആശാനാണ്.

Glimpses from Kumaranashan’s Diary: History, Grief, and Personal Reflections

A single-line remark made by Kumaranashan in his 1911 diary about the members of the Sree Moolam Praja Sabha carries great historical significance. He wrote: “I am the only Ezhava member this term. It is a great pity.” The diary also notes that, during the same year, Ayyankali visited the Yogam office, and that Ashan had signed a register collecting signatures from those willing to extend personal assistance. On April 3, 1911, Kumaranashan’s mother passed away. The diary records the deep sorrow he experienced upon hearing the news and mentions that he wrote the poem “Oru Anuthapam” (“A Lament” / “A Regret”) in remembrance of that painful separation. Although Ashan generally did not show much interest in writing diaries regularly, a few brief notes from 1912 can still be seen. One interesting entry from July 13, 1913, simply states: “Began to practice cycling.” This short remark offers a rare and personal glimpse into the everyday life of the great poet.

1911-ലെ ഡയറിയിൽ ശ്രീമൂലം പ്രജാസഭയിലെ അംഗങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി ആശാൻ ഒറ്റവരിയിൽ നടത്തിയിരിക്കുന്ന പരാമർശത്തിന് ചരിത്രപ്രാധാന്യമേറും. ‘I am the only Ezhava member this term. It is a great pity’ എന്നാണ് എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതേ വർഷം യോഗം ഓഫീസിൽ അയ്യങ്കാളി എത്തിയതായും വ്യക്തിപരമായ സഹായം ചെയ്യാൻ സന്നദ്ധരായവരുടെ ഒപ്പ് ശേഖരിക്കുന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിൽ താൻ ഒപ്പിട്ടതായും ആശാൻ ഡയറിയിൽ കുടിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1911 ഏപ്രിൽ 3-നാണ് കുമാരനാശാന്റെ അമ്മ മരണപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈ വിവരം അറിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ഉണ്ടായ ദുഃഖവും വേർപാടിൽ അനുസ്മരിച്ചു ‘ഒരു അനുതാപം’ എന്ന കവിത എഴുതിയതായും ഡയറിക്കുറിപ്പുകളിൽ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു.
തുടർച്ചയായി ഡയറി എഴുതാൻ പൊതുവേ താൽപര്യം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കാതിരുന്ന ആശാൻ 1912-ൽ വളരെ കുറച്ചു കുറിപ്പുകൾ എഴുതിയതായി മാത്രമേ കാണുന്നുള്ളൂ. ആശാൻ സൈക്കിൾ ചവിട്ടാൻ പരിശീലിച്ചിരുന്ന നാളുകളിൽ ‘ബിഗാൻ ടു പ്രാക്ടീസ് സൈക്ലിംഗ്’ എന്ന് 1913 ജൂലൈ 13-ലെ ഡയറിയിൽ ഒറ്റവരി പരാമർശമുണ്ട്.

Kumaranashan Reports Sree Narayana Guru’s New Ashram Vision at Varkala

In the first issue of Vivekodayam (1079 ME),, Kumaranashan wrote as follows:

"Swami [Sree Narayana Guru] had left Aruvippuram following the Shivaratri festival and is now residing in Varkala. Near the famous Varkala Tunnel, he is currently establishing a new madam (hermitage) on a hill. Adjacent to this hill, a large agricultural garden has been set up, where various types of plants are being cultivated in abundance. It is understood that Swami intends to develop this madam into a permanent ashram. Furthermore, it is known that he will only return to Aruvippuram after the tenth day of the Malayalam month of Idavam.

1079-ലെ വിവേകോദയത്തിന്റെ പ്രഥമ ലക്കത്തിൽ കുമാരനാശാൻ ഇപ്രകാരം എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

" സ്വാമി അവർകൾ ശിവരാത്രിയോട് കൂടി അരുവിപ്പുറം വിട്ടിട്ട് ഇപ്പോൾ വർക്കലയിൽ ഇരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പ്രസിദ്ധമായ വർക്കല തുരങ്കതോടടുത്ത ഒരു കുന്നിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ഇപ്പോൾ പുതുതായി ഒരു മാടം സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ആ കുന്നിനോട് ചേർന്ന് വലുതായ ഒരു കൃഷി തോട്ടം ഏർപ്പെടുത്തി. അതിൽ പലവക സസ്യങ്ങൾ സമൃദ്ധിയായി കൃഷി ചെയ്തു വരുന്നു എന്നും സ്വാമിക്ക് ആ മഠത്തെ ഒരു സ്ഥിരാശ്രമം എന്ന നിലയിൽ കൊണ്ട് വരുന്നതിലേക്ക് ഉദ്ദേശ്യമുണ്ടെന്നും ഇടവമാസം പത്തു കഴിഞ്ഞു മാത്രമേ അരുവിപ്പുറത്തേക്ക് മടങ്ങി യാത്രയുള്ളൂ എന്നും അറിയുന്നു" .

Kumaranashan’s Account of Sree Narayana Guru’s Visit to Kumarakom in 1906

Kumaranashan recorded the events associated with the 1906 visit of Sree Narayana Guru to Kumarakom, Kottayam, in the following words: “Among the socially beneficial activities undertaken after reaching the place, the most important were the establishment of a temple under the Kumarakom Samajam and the selection of a site for a school. In addition to this, Swami also put an end to the annual sacrifice of countless goats and chickens that had been conducted for years at an ancient Bhagavathi temple belonging to the Vallabhassery family of Kottayam, just as he had done in many similar temples elsewhere. He also succeeded in making many people give up alcohol and cured many patients of illnesses. Even now, we continue to receive numerous astonishing accounts regarding the works carried out there by the Swami. It is said that in the newly established Kumarakom temple, devotees praying with faith in his spiritual presence are experiencing remarkable fulfilments of their prayers, and because of this, the temple’s income has been increasing rapidly. Those who abandoned drinking through his influence are said to now vomit even at the sight of liquor. Everyone, in one way or another, acknowledges the power of the mental magnetism of great souls. A few years ago, the influence of this Yogeeswara had left many in Central and South Travancore utterly astonished. Although he has now transcended the stage of displaying wonders and attained a higher and more serene spiritual state, we may still believe that the power hidden within him occasionally manifests outwardly on its own for the welfare of others...”

1906-ൽ തൃപ്പാദങ്ങളുടെ കോട്ടയം കുമ്രരകം സന്ദർശനവേളയിലെ വിശേഷങ്ങൾ ആശാൻ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്:. " സ്ഥലത്തെത്തിയശേഷം ചെയ്ത പൊതുഗുണപ്രദങ്ങളായ സംഗതികളിൽ കുമരകം സമാജം വകയായി ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം ആരംഭിച്ചതും സ്കൂളിന് സ്ഥാനം കണ്ടതും മറ്റും പ്രധാനങ്ങളാകുന്നു. ഇതുകൂടാതെ കോട്ടയം വല്ലഭശ്ശേരി കുടുംബക്കാരുടെ വകയായി വളരെ പുരാതനമായ ഒരു ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കൊല്ലംതോറും നടന്നുവന്നിരുന്ന അസംഖ്യം ആടുകളുടെയും കോഴികളുടെയും ഹിംസയെ സ്വാമി . അവർകൾ (ഇമ്മാതിരിയുള്ള മറ്റ് അനേകം ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ എന്നപോലെ) നിർത്തൽ ചെയ്യുകയും അനേകം മദ്യപാനികളുടെ കൂടി ഉപേക്ഷിപ്പിക്കുകയും അനേകം രോഗികളെ സുഖപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുകയുണ്ടായി. സ്വാമി അവർകൾ അവിടെ ചെയ്ത പ്രവർത്തികളെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് അനേകം വിസ്മയകരങ്ങളായ ദൃഷ്ടാന്തങ്ങൾ ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് ഇപ്പോഴും കിട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. നൂതനമായി ആരംഭിച്ച കുമരകം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻെറ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യ ബലത്താൽ പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് വലിയ ഫലസിദ്ധികൾ കണ്ടുവരുന്നു എന്നും തന്നിമിത്തം അവിടത്തെ ആദായം വേഗത്തിൽ വർദ്ധിച്ചുവരുന്നു എന്നും അറിയുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്താൽ കുടി ഉപേക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടവർ മദ്യം കണ്ടാൽ ഇപ്പോൾ ഛർദ്ദിക്കുന്നുവത്രെ. മഹാത്മാക്കളുടെ മന:ശ്ശക്തി( Mental magnetism)യുടെ വൈഭവത്തെപ്പറ്റി ഒരുപ്രകാരം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മറ്റൊരുപ്രകാരം എല്ലാവരും സമ്മതിക്കുന്നതാണ്. ഏതാനും കൊല്ലങ്ങൾക്കു മുമ്പിൽ മദ്ധ്യദക്ഷിണ തിരുവിതാംകൂറിൽ അനേകരെ വിസ്മയാകുലരാക്കിയിരുന്ന ഈ യോഗീശ്വരന്റെ പ്രഭാവം താൻ ഇപ്പോൾ ആശ്ചര്യങ്ങളെ പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന അവസ്ഥയെ കടന്നു ഉപരിതനവും ശാന്തവുമായ നിലയെ പ്രാപിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണെങ്കിലും തന്നിൽതന്നെ മറഞ്ഞിരുന്നുകൊണ്ട് പരോപകാരാർത്ഥം ചിലപ്പോൾ സ്വയമേവ വെളിയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നുതന്നെ നമുക്കു വിചാരിക്കാം..."

Kumaranashan’s Call for Industry and Self-Reliance (1905)

By 1905, the Ezhava community had only just begun to gain gradual access to formal education. Kumaranashan closely observed that many educated youths, instead of taking up productive occupations, remained inactive while waiting solely for government jobs. Believing that true progress for both home and society could come only through enterprise and industry, Ashan wrote a powerful article urging people to move beyond dependence on official employment. In the article, he appealed to the financially privileged members of the community to support poor youngsters in traveling abroad, learning modern industries, and introducing those skills back home. A translated portion of Ashan’s words reads: “Among us (the Ezhava community), we can see many wealthy men. From ancient times itself, numerous tharavads among us have lived in prosperity and affluence. All this stands as proof of our industrious nature. Our ancestors did not earn their wealth through government service. In this land, filled for centuries with extraordinary caste prejudice and hostility, we have had to endure the oppression of merciless upper sections of society. Yet, when we reflect upon the fact that we still continue to live with a reasonable degree of well-being, we ourselves can understand how enduring and powerful the fruits of industry truly are. There are many young men among us who, after studying up to the matriculation class, remain idle here and there while burdening their tharavads. Their numbers are increasing year after year to such an extent that guardians may soon lose confidence in providing English education to their children. Instead of wasting time wandering in search of petty jobs that merely allow them to survive on family support, how much brighter our future would become if these youths turned themselves into productive workers. If even half a dozen among them could travel to countries such as Japan, study scientific industries, and return to spread that knowledge among our people, how quickly the condition of our community and our country would improve.” Ashan’s vision was remarkably forward-looking for his time. Long before industrial education and entrepreneurship became widely discussed in Kerala, he was advocating scientific training, global exposure, self-reliance, and economic empowerment as the true path toward social progress.

1905 കാലം. ഈഴവർക്ക് വിദ്യാലയ പ്രവേശനം അൽപ്പാൽപ്പമായി ലഭിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയിട്ടേയുള്ളൂ. പഠിച്ചവരാകട്ടെ മറ്റു തൊഴിലുകളൊന്നും എടുക്കാതെ, ഉദ്യോഗം മാത്രം പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് നിഷ്ക്രിയരായി കാലം കഴിക്കുന്നത് ആശാൻ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിരുന്നു. വീടിനും നാടിനും അഭിവൃദ്ധി ഉണ്ടാകണമെങ്കിൽ ഉദ്യോഗം കാത്തിരിക്കാതെ വ്യവസായത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിയ്ക്കണമെന്ന് ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട് ആശാൻ ഒരു ലേഖനമെഴുതി. വിദേശത്തുപോയി വ്യവസായങ്ങളെ പറ്റി പഠിക്കുന്നതിനും അത് നാട്ടിൽ പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുംമറ്റും ധനശേഷിയുള്ളവർ നിർധനരെ സഹായിക്കുവാൻ മുന്നോട്ടുവരണമെന്നും ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ആശാന്റെ ലേഖനത്തിലെ ഒരു ഭാഗം : "നമ്മിൽ (ഈഴവ സമുദായത്തിൽ) അനേകം ലക്ഷേശ്വരന്മാരെ നാം കാണുന്നുണ്ട്. പുരാതന കാലം മുതൽക്കേ ഐശ്വര്യാഭിവൃദ്ധിയോടുകൂടി കഴിഞ്ഞുപോരുന്ന ഒട്ടനവധി തറവാടുകൾ നമ്മുടെ ഇടയിലുണ്ട്. അതെല്ലാം നമ്മുടെ വ്യവസായ ശീലത്തിന്റെ മാത്രം ദൃഷ്ടാന്തമാകുന്നു. നമ്മുടെ പൂർവ്വന്മാർ ഉദ്യോഗം ഭരിച്ചല്ല ധനം സമ്പാദിച്ചത്. അസാമാന്യമായ ജാത്യസൂയയും വൈരവും കൊണ്ടു നിറഞ്ഞിരുന്ന ഈ രാജ്യത്ത് അനവധി കാലമായി നിഷ്കരുണന്മാരായ ഉയർന്ന പരിഷകളുടെ ഞെരുക്കങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം സഹിച്ചു ജീവിക്കേണ്ടിവരുന്ന നാം ഇപ്പോഴും സാമാന്യം ക്ഷേമമായി കഴിയുന്നതു വിചാരിച്ചാൽ വ്യവസായത്തിന്റെ ഫലം എത്ര അവ്യാഹതമായിയിട്ടുള്ളതാണെന്ന് നമുക്ക് തന്നെ കാണാം. മെട്രിക്കുലേഷൻ ക്ലാസുവരെ പഠിച്ച് തറവാടുകളെ പീഡിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അങ്ങുമിങ്ങും എത്താതെ നിൽക്കുന്ന അനേകം യുവാക്കന്മാർ നമ്മുടെ ഇടയിലുണ്ട്. ഇവരുടെ സംഖ്യ രക്ഷകർത്താക്കന്മാർക്ക് മേലാൽ കുട്ടികളുടെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിൽ അധൈര്യം ജനിപ്പിക്കത്തക്കവണ്ണം കൊല്ലംതോറും വർദ്ധിച്ചു വരികയാണ്. തറവാട്ടിൽനിന്നും കൊണ്ടുപോയി ചെലവുകഴിക്കത്തക്കവണ്ണമുള്ള ചില്ലറ ഉദ്യോഗങ്ങളെ മോഹിച്ചുനടന്ന് കാലം കളയാതെ ഓരോ തൊഴിലാളികളായി തിരിയുവാൻ ഇവർക്ക് മനസ്സുണ്ടാവുകയാണെങ്കിൽ എത്ര നല്ലതായ ഒരു ഭാവിയാണ് നമ്മുടെ മുമ്പിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഇവരിൽ അരഡസൻ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ജപ്പാൻ മുതലായ ദേശങ്ങളിൽ പോയി ശാസ്ത്രീയമായ വ്യവസായങ്ങൾ പഠിച്ചുവന്ന് അവയെ നമ്മുടെ ഇടയിൽ പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുവാൻ കഴിയുമെങ്കിൽ നമ്മുടെ സമുദായത്തിന്റെയും രാജ്യത്തിന്റെയും സ്ഥിതി എത്ര വേഗത്തിൽ ഭേദപ്പെട്ടുപോകുന്നതാണ്."...
