The Kerala State Higher Education Council expresses profound sorrow at the passing of Professor K. N. Panikkar, eminent historian, public intellectual, and the first Vice-Chairman of the Kerala State Higher Education Council. He passed away in Thiruvananthapuram on 9 March 2026 at the age of 89.
Professor Panikkar was one of the most distinguished historians of modern India. Over the course of a distinguished academic career, he taught at several leading institutions in India and abroad, including Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi where he served as Professor of History and later as the Dean of the School of Social Sciences. His scholarship profoundly shaped the study of colonialism, culture, religion, and social movements in modern India.
Beyond his contributions as a historian, Prof. Panikkar played an important role in strengthening academic institutions and the culture of critical dialogue in Kerala and across India. He served as Vice-Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala and as the founding Chairperson of the Kerala Council for Historical Research.
As the first Vice-Chairman of KSHEC, Prof. Panikkar played a pivotal role in shaping the Council during its formative years, offering intellectual leadership and guidance in advancing the vision of a vibrant and socially responsive higher education system in Kerala.
A prolific author, his influential works --such as Against Lord and State: Religion and Peasant Uprisings in Malabar (1836–1921) and several other seminal writings --continue to shape scholarly debates and historical understanding.
The Kerala State Higher Education Council pays tribute to Prof. Panikkar’s extraordinary intellectual legacy, his unwavering commitment to critical scholarship, and his lifelong dedication to higher education and public discourse.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and the wider academic community.
