Workshop for Master Trainers on Quality Control and Testing
A Five Day Workshop for Master Trainers on Quality Control and Testing was conducted from 31 January to 4 February 2023 for the technical staff of the Quality Control wing of PWD. The training programme commenced with an introduction on pavement structures and pavement materials, its properties, tests, significance and applications in pavement engineering by Sri Sreejith G H, Deputy Director, Flexible Pavement Division, KHRI. It was followed by a session on ‘Geotechnical Investigation & Report Preparation’ by Smt Madhumitha S, Geotechnical Engineer, KHRI. Hands-on-training was provided to the trainees on the various soil tests for road construction like Sieve Analysis, Atterberg Limits, Proctor Compaction, Field Dry Density and California Bearing Ratio, by the technical team of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Lab. This session also included ‘Review of Geotechnical Report’ and ‘Interpretation of Laboratory Test Results’ after which the trainees were encouraged to raise doubts and conduct the tests by themselves.
As part of the programme, the trainees were given exposure in tests on aggregate: Bulk Density and Specific Gravity, Elongation and Flakiness Index, Impact Value and Los Angeles Abrasion. They were also trained in tests on bitumen like Pe*******on, Viscosity, Ductility, Softening Point and Specific Gravity and on the tests on bitumen mixes, preparation of Marshall Specimen, Asphalt Mix Volumetrics, Marshall Stability and Flow Test. This session on tests on aggregate and bitumen was handled by the technical personnel of the Flexible Pavement Lab.
The workshop also included demonstration of tests on Cement such as Consistency, Setting Time and Compressive Strength; tests on steel like Tensile Strength, Yield Strength, Elongation and Mass per Metre; and Compressive Strength Test on Core, Cube, Solid Block and Paver Block. This session was handled by the technical personnel of the Concrete and Structures Lab. The programme concluded with an evaluation test for the trainees who will be certified as Master Trainers after qualifying the test.
