Diversity in the workplace refers to the presence of various identities, including those who are frequently marginalized in their professional field and/or in society as a whole. However, diversity does not always imply inclusion and equity.
Inclusion goes a step further, asking, "Do employees of diverse identities feel welcomed, valued, and supported?" The mere presence of a diverse workforce does not imply that a workplace is empowering for all employees.
This is where equity enters the picture: Aside from diversity and inclusion, it describes a set of preconditions rather than an outcome. For managers and human resource professionals, equity is a task that requires them to recognize the different starting points that employees from various backgrounds have and to correct this imbalance so that everyone has the same opportunities to grow and succeed.
