A Seed Bred ForIndia, Built For The World

At Musunuru, Shri Pattabi Rama Rao, SBP, Managing Director, Gourmet Popcornica Pvt. Ltd., described the launch of India’s first non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn hybrid as more than a product milestone. It marks the culmination of an 11-year journey to develop a seed bred in India, for Indian soil, capable of delivering world-class popcorn.

He acknowledged the farmers who stood by the journey, along with the support of the Government of India and Government of Andhra Pradesh, which helped a home-grown agri-enterprise turn its vision into reality.

From a homegrown enterprise in Andhra Pradesh to Asia’s largest popcorn maize processor and the world’s fifth largest this is a story of how innovation can turn agriculture into a global opportunity.

At the launch of India’s first Non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seeds, Hon’ble Vice President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan highlighted the journey as an inspiring example for farmers, entrepreneurs and MSMEs.

The Non-GMO Popcorn Hybrids strengthening local production, Andhra Pradesh is building a homegrown popcorn value chain, from seed and cultivation to large-scale processing.

Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s vision is clear: agriculture must move beyond livelihood to become an economic power, with farmers at the centre as entrepreneurs.

A New Chapter In India's Popcorn Agriculture

Andhra Pradesh marked a significant milestone in agricultural value addition with the launch of India’s first non-GMO popcorn maize hybrid seed at Katrenipadu, Eluru district. The launch was led by Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan, in the presence of Governor of Andhra Pradesh Justice S. Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, along with other senior dignitaries.

The development strengthens Andhra Pradesh’s position as a hub for high-value, diversified agriculture. Gourmet Popcornica’s processing facility at Musunuru is among Asia’s largest popcorn processing centres, creating an integrated ecosystem from cultivation to processing.

With thousands of farmers already cultivating popcorn maize in collaboration with Gourmet Popcornica, this initiative opens new avenues for crop diversification, value addition and higher farm incomes, reinforcing Andhra Pradesh’s vision of a more productive and prosperous agricultural economy.

Amaravati’s New Link To The East

A major new greenfield corridor is set to strengthen Amaravati’s connection with eastern India, creating a faster and more direct route between Kharagpur and the capital region.

The 1,107-km Kharagpur–Amaravati corridor will pass through West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. In Andhra Pradesh, the 457-km alignment will connect Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Polavaram, East Godavari and Eluru districts with Amaravati, covering towns including Kurupam, Salur, Araku, Paderu, Chintapalli, Gokavaram, Jangareddygudem, Dwaraka Tirumala and Nuzvid.

The Andhra Pradesh stretch is estimated at ₹32,000 crore, as part of the ₹75,629-crore four-state project. Designed as a 90-metre-wide, four-lane greenfield highway for speeds of 100–120 kmph, it will enable faster movement of people and goods, improve access to less-connected regions and strengthen their link to Amaravati.

A key rail corridor in Andhra Pradesh is set for expansion.

With ₹2,229 crore approved by the Union Cabinet, the Gummidipundi–Gudur corridor will get its 3rd and 4th railway lines, adding capacity to a route already operating at 131%.

The project will enable smoother passenger and freight movement while strengthening links to Tirupati, Chennai, Vijayawada and Renigunta and supporting the Vizag–Chennai Industrial Corridor.
