Popularly known as Loafer’s Corner, Princess Street is a quaint street in Kochi loaded with the vibrancy and grandiose of the old world charm. Located in the heart of the city, the place is amalgamation of the old times and the new. It is littered with clubs and cafes and is the life of the party animals and socialites. Littered with umpteen European homes built in the Dutch, British, French, and Portuguese styles, the grand style street reminds one of the colonial era. In the mornings you can smell the aroma of freshly baked bread coming out of the dainty bakeries and in the evenings the street is lit up in neon lights and is bustled with people coming here for dinners, dances and parties.

The lane is strewn about with shops selling handcrafted products, souvenirs, traditional items, jewellery, clothes and footwear. Infact, it boasts of being one of the most popular ‘touristy’ markets in all of town. Other than that, the street is lined with stalls and eateries offering lip-smacking snacks and beverages. From romantic coffee dates to fine dine candle light dinners, all night parties and casual meals, the place offers everything. Besides, it also has spas and massage parlours which you can visit to relax and rewind. You can also take a tour of the European style houses as most of these invite tourists inside their homes to have a look.

Cherai beach is one of the must visit places in Cochin. The 10 kilometer long Cherai Beach is the longest beach in Kerala. The beach is located on the northern end of Vypeen Island. Tourists who visit Cherai beach can witness the alluring beauty of backwaters merging with the majestic Arabian Sea. This beach is also renowned for dolphin watching.

The 15 kilometer shoreline of Cherai beach is also known for being one of the cleanest beaches in India. The shallow depth of the water here is safe for swimming and other water sports. The beach has a 400 meter walkway and a children’s park, making your visit even more enjoyable. The best time to visit the beach is from the end of September to mid March. Since it is a coastal area, the weather might be slightly humid yet pleasant during these months.

This is a one of a kind Museum which portrays a variety of gallery art, sales, live dance forms which vary from ritualistic to martial arts, and souvenirs. Some of the pieces at this gallery are priceless. One can also sell his/her fine arts and antiques here which might be put up on display later. It is a family run private museum curated by Annie George and started in 2009. It houses around 5000 artefacts.

One can find glimpses of ancient temples and traditional houses of Kerala. The collection is divided into three floors - Ground, first and second. The ground floor represents artefacts from Malabar, the first floor have collection from the epoch of Portuguese in Kochi and the second-floor houses the artefacts collection from Travancore. The collection includes jewellery, manuscripts, musical instruments, Thayyam and costumes of other folk art form. The top floor also has intricate` wood carvings on the ceiling.

Quaint shops around Synagogue Lane and Jew Town Road sell antiques, carvings, and vintage collectibles, along with Keralan crafts and aromatic spices. Laid-back outdoor cafes and artsy eateries, some in heritage buildings, serve local specialties and Western fare.

Located at Tripunithura, The Hill Palace is the largest archaeological museum in Kerala. It was built in the year 1865 and was once the Imperial Administrative offices and official residence of the Maharaja of Cochin. Just as the name suggests, the massive palace is located on a hill and has a beautiful garden. Built in 1865, the Palace complex consists of 49 buildings in the traditional architectural style, spreading across in 54 acres. The complex has an archaeological museum, a heritage museum, a deer park, a pre-historic park and a children's park. The huge white coloured buildings are neat, clean and well maintained. The terraced lawn, ponds and fountain are perfect for outdoor photography. The palace is also famous for being the backdrop of various movies. The most popular amongst them is the Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu.

The enormous palace complex is famous for being a full-fledged ethnoarchaeological museum and the first ever heritage museum of the state. Upon visiting, one can see the oil paintings, murals, sculptures, swords, crowns, coins, manuscripts and various other belongings of the Kochi royal family. Apart from that, antique ceramics from the Far East, Kudakkallu (tombstone), Thoppikkallu (hood stone), laterite memorials, contemporary art and wooden memorials from ancient civilisations like the Indus Valley and Harada are also kept for display here. The main highlight among the above is the Gold crown which is embedded with precious stones. The rooms in here are also huge, declaring the lavish lifestyle of former kings and his household.

This centre at Fort Cochin has seen many dance performances! The amount of effort put in by the dancers is commendable. It is usually rife with locals and foreign tourists who come to enjoy the dance show. It also has morning meditation shows which one can take part in. The architecture of the Kerala Kathakali Centre is something special. The centre’s interiors follow the Malabar style of architecture and are mostly made up of beautiful wood carvings which gives the place a very traditional, yet appealing look.

Apart from Kathakali, the centre is also known to for its short-term as well as long-term courses in dance styles such as Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi and Mohinattam. It also has courses in Kalaripayattu, Classical music (both Carnatic as well as Hindustani), Percussion instruments such as Drums, Tabla, Madalam, String instruments such as Violin, Veena and Sitar and the flute.

Overlooking the serene backwaters of Kerala is Marine Drive, one of the most popular hangout spots in the city of Kochi. Bolgatty Palace is located in Bolgatty Island of Kochi and is one of the oldest existing Dutch palaces that is situated outside Holland. It is an exquisite example of the Kochi style of architecture. Built in 1744 by Dutch traders, it was later extended, and gardens were landscaped around it. Green gardens, azure skies and the virgin charms of Kerela are aplenty at the Bolgatty Palace. Owing to its picturesque surroundings and rich history, the building has also served as the Governor's palace for the commander of Dutch Malabar and was the home of the British. The Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary sprawling over 2.74 hectares is situated in the heart of the lively city of Kochi. Comprising of 18-acres of Mangroves which is home to a large variety of migratory birds and densely populated species of trees and plants. In the middle of the sanctuary, there is a shallow tidal lake present which is surrounded by thick mangrove vegetation and is connected to the backwaters of Kochi via a canal.

One of the major attractions is the beautiful watch tower which overlooks the sanctuary thereby giving a superb view to the tourists. According to a survey which was conducted in 2006, it is home to as many as 194 birds belonging to 32 different species. Back in 2004, Mangalavanam was declared as a protected area because of being home to the breeding birds and unique mangrove vegetation. The sanctuary is also known as the green lung of Ernakulum due to it being a posh wetland comprising of rare species. Get on top of the watchtower to get a beautiful view of the Bird Sanctuary.

The Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department also conducts a free nature camp at the sanctuary which is attended by tourists from different parts of the world. Administered and controlled by the Assistant Conservator of Forest and Wildlife Warden Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary of Nature Study Center Kalady, the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is a wonderful place to visit with your friends and family.

The Willingdon Island is one of the largest human-made islands in India which is named after Lord Willingdon, the British Viceroy of India. This beautiful island provides various links between Kochi port and other national and international ports. Furthermore, the island is home to some of the lavish hotels and commercial and industrial buildings of the district. It is between Ernakulum Jetty and Kochi Port and the ferry costs around INR 6. There is a bridge that connects the mainland of Kochi to Willingdon Island. This human-made island also serves as the headquarter for the southern naval command of India.

Created by Sir Robert Bristow, a visionary harbour engineer, the island is significant as it is the habitat for the Port of Kochi, the Kochi Naval Base of the Indian Navy and Central Institute of Fisheries Technology. Apart from commercial purposes, the island has a museum and natural habitat to explore.
