Located in the dense forests of Sathuragiri, Tamil Nadu, the massive natural formation has taken the shape of a Shivling and is extensively revered by the locals. On the back side, the root formation of the trees have grown on the lingam in a manner that resembles the Jata of Bhagwan Shiv.

Located about 24 km north of Gaya in the state, the Barabar caves are the only remains of the lost Ajivika sect.
Located in the twin hills of Barabar and Nagarjuni, each of the Barabar caves (4 in Barabar and 3 in Nagarjuni) are carved out of granite and feature chambers with a highly polished surface, completely missing any kind of sculpture or embellishments.
Interestingly, these are the very caves which saw the use of the Chaitya Arch in stone for the first time. The inscriptions found in here date to the Mauryan period.
The inscription in the Sudama cave informs that the four caves on Barabar hill were assigned by King Ashoka to Ajivika monks in 261 BC. Another inscription on the Nagarjuni hill is of the grandson of King Ashoka, Dasaratha Maurya, which tells that the Ajivikas continued to enjoy imperial Mauryan patronage for long.

Malyavatha Raghunatha Temple 🌺

Continuing the lesser seen side of Hampi, where we went to Malyavanta hill. Those who have read the stories of Ramayana and especially the Bali - Sugreeva fight can see it come to life here.
Tall boulders , a dark cave where lord Rama is said to have meditated and a 24x7 recital of the Ramayana by a group of priests makes you believe that you are in the Kishkinda empire.
Walk a little away further till the sounds of the priests die down and walk further on the slopes of the boulders to see the whole city of Hampi.
This is another viewpoint with stunning views. But you see something even more intriguing here. Dozens of shiv lings and Nandi bulls carved with no known history. Some say it was before the Vijayanagar empire, some say it was build by the Vijayanagar kings.

For me, it’s just an ethereal place with mysteries and the power to make you go back and relive eras.
