EUAM Iraq is an important partner in supporting Iraq’s work to build effective, accountable civilian security institutions. Through its programs on security sector reform and rule of law, the mission contributes to a more stable and secure Iraq. Yesterday, we marked the final day of H.E. Janet Alberda as Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Iraq. 🇳🇱🇮🇶

We thank Ambassador Alberda for two remarkable years of dedicated service, leadership, and commitment to strengthening the partnership between the Netherlands and Iraq.

Freeform of religion and belief is a strong pillar in NL’s human rights foreign policy objectives. We were reminded of its importance, during a meaningful visit to Mosul. At this ancient location, communities of various faiths have lived together for millennia. Visiting the al-Nouri mosque and the Immaculate and Saint Thomas churches, we were reminded of the resilience of the country and its rich religious diversity and strong tradition of coexistence.

The Netherlands remains committed to promoting and protecting this mutual respect as part of Iraq’s cultural heritage. 🇳🇱🤝🇮🇶

حرية الدين والمعتقد تُعدّ ركيزةً أساسية في سياسة مملكة هولندا الخارجية في مجال حقوق الإنسان.

وقد تجلّت أهمية هذه القيمة خلال زيارتنا المؤثرة إلى مدينة الموصل، حيث تعايشت عبر آلاف السنين مكوّنات دينية وثقافية متنوعة. ومن خلال زيارتنا إلى جامع النوري وكنيستي الطاهرة والقديس توما، استذكرنا صمود العراق، وغناه بتنوعه الديني، وإرثه العريق في التعايش السلمي.

Bittersweet goodbyes. As Ambassador Janet Alberda’s posting in Iraq is coming to a close, the embassy team had a beautiful but bittersweet visit to Erbil, Sulaimaniyah in Kurdistan region and Mosul city. We’re impressed by the resilience and energy of old and new friends, the cultural diversity of the country and its opportunities. 🇳🇱🤝 🇮🇶

وداع يحمل الكثير من المشاعر. مع اقتراب إنتهاء مهمة سعادة السفيرة جانيت ألبيردا في العراق، قام فريق السفارة بزيارة جميلة، وإن كانت ممزوجة بمشاعر الوداع، إلى محافظات أربيل والسليمانية في إقليم كردستان والموصل.

لقد أُعجبنا بقدرة أصدقائنا القدامى والجدد على الصمود، وبالطاقة التي يتمتعون بها، وبالتنوع الثقافي الغني الذي يزخر به العراق، وبما يمتلكه من فرص واعدة. 🇳🇱🤝🇮🇶

🇳🇱🇮🇶 Strengthening our migration cooperation

On 6 July 2026, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Republic of Iraq held High-Level Bilateral Migration Consultations in Baghdad.

The hosting Iraqi delegation was led by H.E. Bahr Al-Uloom, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq. The Dutch delegation was led by Mr. Peter Schuurman, Special Envoy for Migration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, joined by H.E. Janet Alberda, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Iraq, and their teams.

Our constructive dialogue focused on areas of mutual importance, including safe return and sustainable reintegration, as well as the Netherlands’ broader migration programmes in Iraq.

The delegations also explored opportunities to further strengthen cooperation, including joint efforts to counter irregular migration, human trafficking, and migrant smuggling.

We look forward to continuing our dialogue and close cooperation on this important topic 🤝

في 6 تموز 2026، عقدت مملكة هولندا وجمهورية العراق مشاورات ثنائية رفيعة المستوى بشأن الهجرة في العاصمة بغداد.

وترأس الوفد العراقي المستضيف سعادة السيد محمد حسين بحر العلوم، وكيل وزارة الخارجية، فيما ترأس الوفد الهولندي السيد بيتر شورمان، المبعوث الخاص للهجرة في وزارة خارجية مملكة هولندا، بمشاركة سعادة السيدة جانيت ألبيردا، سفيرة مملكة هولندا لدى جمهورية العراق، إلى جانب أعضاء الوفدين.

وركز الحوار البنّاء على عدد من القضايا ذات الاهتمام المشترك، بما في ذلك العودة الآمنة وإعادة الإدماج المستدام، إضافةً إلى برامج هولندا الأوسع في مجال الهجرة في العراق.

كما بحث الوفدان سبل تعزيز التعاون المشترك، بما في ذلك الجهود الرامية إلى مكافحة الهجرة غير النظامية، والاتجار بالبشر، وتهريب المهاجرين.

ونتطلع إلى مواصلة الحوار والتعاون الوثيق بين بلدينا في هذا الملف المهم. 🤝

In honor of the visit of the Dutch special envoy for migration, the embassy organized a photography competition and exhibition.

The embassy was delighted to host this exhibition called “Home” in the beautiful venue and with cooperation of . It brought together photographers from across Iraq to explore the many meanings of “home”, as well as reasons to leave it, through images and personal stories.

In the presence of H.E. Viceminister of Foreign Affairs Bahr Al Uloom, the exhibition showcased 32 selected photographs - each offering a unique perspective on the experiences that lead to migration. Noteworthy was that reasons to migrate from both the past - war on ISIS - as well as the future - a changing climate - were represented.

The embassy congratulates the three winners and thanks every photographer and guest for making the evening a remarkable one.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands, together with the Government of Iraq, will continue to work on the protection of refugees and IDPs in Iraq.

Transfer News!

After two seasons with Team Netherlands in Iraq, our Economic Secretary Christian Hagedorn is making his next career move.

Over the past two years, Christian has worked with Iraqi and Dutch partners to strengthen the economic relationship between our two countries. From supporting Iraq’s economic development to fostering trade and business cooperation between Iraq and the Netherlands.

Along the way, he also became a proud supporter of the Iraqi national football team - so passing on the jersey felt like the perfect way to mark this transfer. As one player leaves the pitch, another is ready to step up.

We are delighted to announce that Wouter Jansen will join the Embassy in Baghdad as our new Economic Secretary from mid-July. Working on a rotation basis with Britt Stenberg. We look forward to welcoming them to the team!

Thank you, Christian, for your contribution to strengthening Dutch-Iraqi economic ties. We wish you every success in your next challenge.

بعد موسمين مع فريق هولندا في العراق، يستعد زميلنا كريستيان هاغدورن، السكرتير الاقتصادي في السفارة، لخوض خطوة مهنية جديدة.

خلال العامين الماضيين، عمل كريستيان مع الشركاء العراقيين والهولنديين على تعزيز العلاقات الاقتصادية بين بلدينا، ودعم التعاون في مجالات التنمية الاقتصادية والتجارة والأعمال بين العراق وهولندا.

وخلال هذه الرحلة، أصبح كريستيان أيضاً من مشجعي المنتخب الوطني العراقي، لذلك كان تسليم القميص العراقي أفضل طريقة للاحتفال بهذه الخطوة. فمع مغادرة لاعب لأرض الملعب، يستعد لاعب آخر للدخول إلى المباراة.
