It looks like the basalt column (trap rock) lava formation at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach caused part of the wall to cave in completely and crumble into pieces. In recent days, the area has also seen unusually severe coastal erosion: a large bank has collapsed from the slopes of Reynisfjall down to the beach, reaching as far as the warning signs. Locals say they have never witnessed erosion on this scale in such a short time. Prolonged easterly winds are thought to have driven sand westwards (towards Dyrhólaey), while powerful Atlantic swells have churned up the shoreline, even rolling and shifting large basalt boulders further along the beach. The erosion is still ongoing in places; however, it’s expected that with sustained westerly winds the sand may gradually return and the beach could recover over time—though the displaced rocks are unlikely to move back.

Sigurður (Ziggy) made our ceremony so special and memorable. He took the time to meet with us in advance of our ceremony to interview us and get to know us as a couple and as individuals. He used that information to build us a beautiful and unique ceremony that was incredibly heartfelt and magical. He even picked out the best poem that fit our story (and our sense of humour) perfectly. He was always fast to respond to emails and was very reliable and felxible. I would highly recommend Ziggy to anyone looking to get married in Iceland. 🥰
