It is all about the wonders of north Iceland. Troll Travel pre-scheduled tours start from Siglufjörður, the northernmost town of the island. Troll Travel specializes in opening the eyes of travelers to the immense, inspiring beauty of the rocky Troll Peninsula between the fertile Skagafjörður and Eyjafjörður where agriculture is above par by Icelandic standards. These mountains offer hiking potent
ials for all levels in an environment where you can enjoy extraordinary solitude. In the area you will find variable fjords and their shores with many islands close to it. Troll Travel can also give you the chance to meet the local people. They are genuinely hospitable and warm, willing to tell stories and even open up their houses to strangers. This area has been inhabited from the settlement period around the year 870. During the next 1000 years or so life was extremely strenuous and harsh for the people living in the Troll Peninsula. Some cultural activities took place there though, during the first millennium like playing chess, singing, dancing, reading and of course telling sagas, the Icelandic word for stories. Siglufjörður and other towns in the vicinity played a pivotal role in the spectacular economic development that Iceland experienced this last century. That story is covered extensively by the Herring Era Museum, www.sild.is. To give away the ending, we overfished the most important herring stock in Icelandic waters leading to the crash of the herring industry. Then this area went through deteriorating period for some four decades. Now with the tourism industry growing Siglufjörður and vicinity is regaining some of its former strength. Those of you interested in urban development might have found an interesting case in point. From the northernmost part of the Troll Peninsula you can actually see the Arctic Circle on a bright day as it goes through the island Grímsey. During the summer this area is a paradise of bird fauna in Iceland. One might even see the Icelandic eagle. If you are lucky a seal might be visible and the arctic fox as well. The groups we take care of are small, preferably between 5 and 10 people. Troll Travel runs a flexible organisation so we can also take care of tours for larger groups. Simply make an inquiry and we will grant you our prompt reply.
