Il castello, non fortificato, ha circa 900 anni di storia e sorge arroccato in cima al canyon scavato dal fiume Rio Grande che vi scorre tutt’ora. Ebbe tra i suoi proprietari Eliseo Laureli (nel XIII secolo, Ambasciatore dell’Imperatore di Germania e familiare del Re Ferdinando di Sicilia), Bartolomeo Petrignani (a cui si deve la ca****la interna del ‘500 dedicata a San Bartolomeo), Flavio Boccarini (segretario di Papa Gregorio XIII nel XVI secolo) e l’antico ordine pontificio (Ordo Clericorum Regularium a Somascha) che lo possedette per due secoli fino all’invasione napoleonica. Il castello ha mantenuto il suo carattere monastico che si fonde perfettamente con la verde campagna umbra. Vi si accede tramite un viale fiancheggiato da pini. L'aspetto severo è ora ingentilito da piante fiorite, lumi in ferro battuto e da tanti particolari in carattere con l'atmosfera del luogo. I giardini sono contornati da ulivi e cipressi secondo la più classica tradizione umbro-toscana; quello principale è diviso in due da un antico muro in pietra che si apre in un arco su cui si arrampicano arbusti di rose selvatiche e piante parietali miste a capperi e termina con la grande piscina a coda di pianoforte, a picco sul canyon del fiume Rio Grande che offre una vista senza confini sull'intera vallata. La tenuta ospita una scuderia di cavalli, un branco di daini, un’allevamento di vacche e una colonia di cinghiali che si nutrono delle ghiande delle sovrastanti querce secolari, perfettamente ambientati in questa bellissima natura.

La Tenuta di Totano is a location for weddings and events. It is located one hour by car from Rome, in the Amerine region. The unfortified castle has about 900 years worth of history behind it and is perched on the summit of the canyon, formed due to the Rio Grande which still runs through it to this day. The holding itself constitutes a great part of its view: surrounded by a green belt, typical of the mediterranean scrub, it paints a wavy portrait rich with woods of holm and turkey oaks, gently sloped fields of green dotted with ancient stone farmsteads. Among its previous owners a few names stand out: Eliseo Laureli (Ambassador of the German Emperor and related to King Ferdinand of Sicily), Bartolomeo Petrignani (artist of the internal chapel from the year ‘500 dedicated to St. Bartholomew), Flavio Boccarini (secretary to Pope Gregory XIII in the XVIth century) and the ancient religious order (Ordo Clericorum Regularium a Somascha) that owned the castle for two centuries until the napoleonic invasion. The castle withholds its ancient monastic values which perfectly merge with the lush Umbrian countryside. A tree-lined avenue leads the way to the castle. Its gloomy castle-like look is now masked by flowering plants, wrought-iron lamps and other characteristics typical of its environment. The gardens are adorned with olive and cypress trees in accordance with the classical traditions of the Umbrian-Tuscany regions. The main garden is divided by an ancient stone wall which gives way to an arch enveloped by wild rose and caper bushes and intricate vines. Sitting at the end of the garden is a piano-shaped pool, overlooking the Rio Grande’s canyon and offering a boundless view over the valley. The holding itself hosts stables, a herd of deers, various livestock such as cows and a colony of boars which feed on the acorns fallen from hundred-year old oak trees, perfectly fitted to this beautiful natural environment.
