🔥 NOTICE: CONTROLLED BURN AT THE ATHLETIC FIELDS 🔥

Naval Air Station Sigonella Fire & Emergency Services will be conducting a controlled burn at the NAS 1 athletic fields this morning.
Why are we doing this?

This is a standard, proactive safety measure to clear dry brush and prepare the grounds for our upcoming "Red, White, and Boom" Independence Day celebration on July 4. Taking these steps now ensures a safe, fun environment for everyone when the fireworks fly!

What we need from you:

Stay Clear: Please completely avoid the athletic field area while our crews are operating this morning.

Do Not Panic: If you see smoke or fire apparatus in the vicinity of the fields, rest assured it is a planned, strictly monitored training and mitigation detail.

To our entire NAS Sigonella community—thank you for your continued support, cooperation, and patience as we work to keep our base safe.

⚡️ SAFETY ALERT: Is your home at risk? ⚡️
We use them every day, but did you know that improper use of extension cords causes over 3,000 home fires every year? 🏠🔥

Extension cords are a great temporary fix, but they aren't meant to be permanent wiring. Check out these quick Dos and Don'ts to keep your family safe:

🚫 STOP doing these:
* Daisy-Chaining: Never plug one power strip into another. It’s a major fire hazard!
* Hiding Cords: Don’t run them under rugs or furniture. Trapped heat = fire risk.
* Overloading: Don't crowd one outlet with too many high-power devices.
* Using Damage: If it's frayed or cracked, throw it away. It’s not worth the risk.

✅ START doing these:
* Plug in Directly: Large appliances (like heaters or fridges) should always go straight into the wall.
* Inspect Regularly: Check your cords for heat or damage.
* Unplug: If you aren’t using it, unplug it!
* Make sure your plug is UL or CE certified!

“Past, Present, and Future”

Hello NASSIG Community! I wanted to take a moment to celebrate some major milestones for our team and give you a look at what’s ahead for your Fire & Emergency Services.

The Past: A Legacy of Excellence
A huge congratulations to Fire Chief (Ret) Bill Casey on his induction into the Navy F&ES Hall of Fame. Chief Casey led NASSIG from 2019 to 2021, and the culture of excellence he built is still the standard we live by today. This honor is incredibly well-deserved.

The Present: Award-Winning Service
The foundation Chief Casey built continues with Assistant Chief Mike Balliet, who leads our Prevention Office. Under his leadership, NASSIG F&ES Prevention was recently named the Fire Prevention Program of the Year for Navy Region Europe.

Special shoutout to Fire Inspectors Gene Tatum and Alfio Musumeci—their daily commitment to the safety of our Warfighters and families is what makes awards like this possible. Bravo Zulu on a job well done!
