At NISRF, we take “high-level ISR” literally. Our RQ-4D Phoenix can climb to over 18,000 metres (60,000 feet) - into the stratosphere, where few aircraft ever go. ✈️

With Mount Etna once again sending ash into the sky and lava down its slopes, the view from our home at Italian Air Force Base Sigonella is anything but ordinary.

Against this unmistakably Sicilian backdrop, our multinational NISRF team continues to deliver ISR to support NATO decision-making.

🔍 A closer look at NATO’s RQ-4D Phoenix.

📏 The wingspan

39.8 metres (130.9 feet). Designed for high-altitude, long-endurance ISR.

⚙️ The engine

A Rolls-Royce–North American AE 3007H turbofan delivers 33,800 newtons (7,600 lbf) of thrust.

📷 The nose camera

A small optical camera provides the pilot with a forward view during take-off and landing.

📡 The capability

The RQ-4D Phoenix is equipped with Multi-Platform Radar Technology Insertion Programme (MP-RTIP) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) ground-surveillance sensors, as well as an extensive suite of long-range, wideband line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight data links.

But the aircraft is only one part of the capability. NISRF intelligence analysts process and exploit the collected data, integrate it with information from other sources and turn it into intelligence for NATO decision-makers.

The aircraft collects. NISRF delivers intelligence.

From the Mediterranean to the High North.

NISRF is supporting the third iteration of the Neptune Strike 2026 series, a NATO Enhanced Vigilance Activity conducted in the High North and North Atlantic as part of Arctic Sentry.

From 🇮🇹 Sigonella, Italy, NISRF is providing persistent ISR collection and supporting Find-Fix-Track activities, contributing to Allied multi-domain operations in support of the activity.

✈️ A new chapter for NATO ISR.

Announced at the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum in Ankara, Türkiye, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Norway are procuring up to five MQ-4C Triton uncrewed aircraft to strengthen NATO’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capability.

The new aircraft will complement the NATO-owned RQ-4D Phoenix fleet operated by NISRF from Sigonella, Italy.
