Extensive Reading in Bergamo Italy

Extensive Reading in Bergamo Italy I have been promoting extensive reading in Bergamo since the late 1980s by encouraging my students of English to read graded readers.

In 2023, I organized a full-scale Extensive Reading project at Anderson House with children and adults at our school.

Read this article on why it is harder to read books in the age of screens, monitors, emails and all that. It made want to read again and defeat the temptations of the box, the screen, the tv. Depth vs shallowness. Read in chunks is the advice which I will certainly take on. And finally WHY we must read:

Books open our minds and keep them open. They improve our communication, critical thought and intelligence. But, most importantly, novels boost our empathy. They help us to navigate the world with kindness, with compassion. Putting away screens and spending time with a classic, lingering a little on human nature, feels like a valuable pursuit, even if you have to employ a few tricks.

In less than a decade, surrounded by screens, I lost my ability to read some of the best books ever written. But, inspired by the Guardian’s 100 best novels list, I was determined to get it back

Pls read aloud to your children!

Did you know that reading can actually support children to overcome inequalities before they deepen?

That's one of the reasons we believe every child should have the chance to enjoy reading and all the benefits it brings 💙
