The Natural Reserve “Vincheto di Celarda” extends over a 130 hectares surface in a levee area of the river Piave, to the south-east of the small town of Feltre, in the province of Belluno (Veneto). The area was used to cultivate basket willows from the beginning of the 20th century; from 1920 onwards it was no longer public property but became property of the Forestry and tree nursery activity beg
an, to which fish farming and zootechnics were added after the Second World War. In 1971 the area was classified as a nature reserve for the safeguard of animal and plant populations and in 1976 it was included in the list of “humid zones of international interest” (Ramsar convention), given that damp ecosystems represent the most important naturalistic value of the reserve and host rare and endangered vegetation types and of valuable communities of birds. The reserve is used for dissemination and research activities and for conservation of the animal and plant communities. Several environment-friendly activites also take place in the reserve, such as fish farming, apiculture and horse farming. The most important habitats of the reserve are: riparian forests dominated by Alnus incana and Salix alba with the sporadic presence of Alnus glutinosa and Ulmus sp., that represent an example of a priority habitat for biodiversity conservation (Natura 2000 code 91E0); the forest characterized by Carpinus betulus, Ostrya carpinifolia and other mesic decidous species found where the water-bearing stratum is more in depth (Natura 2000 code 91L0); and the freshwater habitats which includes both standing and running water whith vegetation along their banks (Natura 2000 codes 3150, 3220, 3240 and 3260). Here are treatened species as Potamogeton coloratus, Ranunculus trichophyllus and Myricaria germanica. Among the herbaceous formations the dry and not cultivable meadows (Natura 2000 code 6210) prove to be of great importance for their floristic composition and for the conservation of two rare orchid species: Orchis coriophora and Ophrys holosericea. The floristic diversity and complexity, the availability of food and sites for nest-building represent a perfect environmental setting to take in a rich fauna, too. Il Vincheto di Celarda è situato in provincia di Belluno nel comune di Feltre, a oriente dell’abitato, sulla destra idrografica del fiume Piave, tra la foce del torrente Caorame ed il monte Miesna, ad una quota di 230 m s.l.m.. La riserva occupa 92 ha; tuttavia, l’attuale estensione, comprensiva delle superfici di pertinenza del Demanio Idrico, è pari a circa 130 ettari. Il clima è caratterizzato da una elevata umidità atmosferica, con frequenti nebbie, soprattutto nelle prime ore del giorno; le precipitazioni sono abbondanti soprattutto in primavera ed autunno. Le temperature medie annue sono basse come pure le minime invernali. L’estate è normalmente breve ma abbastanza calda; nelle ore del pomeriggio la calura è regolarmente mitigata dallo spirare di un vento fresco. La riserva, pur avendo una superficie piuttosto modesta, si presenta molto ricca dal punto di vista naturalistico. L’aspetto più caratteristico è sicuramente l’abbondanza d’acqua che ha favorito l’insediamento di varie forme di vita acquatica e di un’avifauna tipica delle zone umide. Con il Decreto Ministeriale 28.12.1971, istitutivo della riserva, il Vincheto di Celarda venne classificato come Riserva Naturale di popolamento animale, destinato cioè a favorire la riproduzione, la sosta ed il rifugio per la fauna stanziale e migratoria. Nell’anno 1976, con la Convenzione di Ramsar, la riserva venne inclusa nell’elenco delle zone umide di interesse internazionale; pochi anni dopo entrò anche a far parte della rete europea delle riserve biogenetiche destinate alla conservazione di particolari ecosistemi forestali per la ricerca biologica. Infine, grazie alle Direttive Europee Uccelli ed Habitat (79/409/CEE e 92/43/CEE) il Vincheto è entrato a far parte della “Rete Natura 2000”. Infatti, con D.M. 03.04.2000, è stato inserito in una più vasta area golenale del Piave classificata “Zona di Protezione Speciale” e “Sito di Importanza Comunitaria”.
