British Archaeological Project at Grumentum

The British Archaeological Project at Grumentum studies an area east of the Forum of Grumentum.

Students can join the project for three weeks every July, when they will learn the most important skills in field archaeology. The British Archaeological Project at Grumentum oversees the excavation of several trenches positioned to the southeast of the forum at Grumentum, a Lucano-Roman town in western Basilicata. The aims of the project are threefold:
(1) to identify the locations of commercial

and industrial structures (tabernae, inns, bakeries, potteries, fulleries, etc.) within the city of Grumentum and its surrounding territory; (2) to connect the development of the town’s urban landscape with the installation of a Roman colony on the site; (3) to assess the arrangement of pre-Roman structures in the areas of excavation (if present). The BAPG also serves as an archaeological field school for students from universities throughout the United Kingdom and North America.

We're back! The British Archaeological Project at Grumentum is now accepting applications for our 2021 field school. Pending the success of the COVID vaccine, we're hopeful that we can finally get back to doing what we love: digging holes! #10 day: end of study season 2019.
In these last 10 days we have been busy checking the find-database, confronting and fine-dating phases across the soundings, eating the local pecorino, drinking Peroni beers, playing pinball and connect 4, but mainly writing the report for the last three seasons.
So much has been done, so much is still to do. Thank you Taylor, Massimo, Kristen and Thomas!
