🌊 The Mediterranean Sea is warming at a rapid pace. Marine heatwaves are reshaping underwater habitats, but did you know that not all "problematic" species are alien?

On one side, native species like the bearded fireworm (π»π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘šπ‘œπ‘‘π‘–π‘π‘’ π‘π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘’π‘›π‘π‘’π‘™π‘Žπ‘‘π‘Ž) are expanding their range and behaving like invasive species, disrupting rocky bottom ecosystems. On the other, new "Lessepsian migrants" continue to arrive from the Red Sea via the Suez Canalβ€”including tropical species like the lionfish, silver-cheeked toadfish, and rabbitfishes.
🐑⚠️ Note: Some of these new arrivals pose serious health risks.

🌿 A new alien species has been recorded in Europe: the Japanese gall-forming thrips π˜—π˜°π˜―π˜΅π˜ͺ𝘀𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘡𝘩𝘳π˜ͺ𝘱𝘴 π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘰𝘴π˜ͺ, associated with persimmon trees, has been reported for the first time in Italy and Switzerland.

Every new record contributes to a better understanding of biological invasions and helps keep information on alien species up to date.

Through the European Alien Species Information Network ( ), information on alien species is collected, integrated and shared to support scientists, practitioners and policymakers in monitoring biological invasions across Europe.

The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released the new IAS Briefing and IAS Dashboards, summarising the findings of the 2019–2024 reporting cycle under the EU Invasive Alien Species (IAS) Regulation. The briefing shows the progress made by EU Member States, while the interactive dashboards give easy access to data on prevention, early detection, rapid eradication and management of IAS.

These resources provide valuable insights into Europe's efforts to address one of the main threats to biodiversity and support evidence-based policymaking.

This work results of collaboration between the EEA, the ETC on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, experts and national reporters from the Member States.

The JRC ensured data interoperability across EU IAS platforms and supplied and NOTSYS data to support Member State reporting.

🦦 Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) Week 2026 | When Policy Meets Biodiversity

The American mink (π˜•π˜¦π˜°π˜¨π˜’π˜­π˜¦ 𝘷π˜ͺ𝘴𝘰𝘯) was introduced to Europe for fur farming. Today, it is listed among the Invasive Alien Species of Union concern due to its impacts on native wildlife and ecosystems.

A recent debate on plans for a new mink farm in Greece highlights the importance of prevention. Escapes and releases from fur farms have contributed to the establishment of wild populations in several European countries, where the species can threaten native biodiversity.

The EU List of Invasive Alien Species was created to help prevent, minimise and mitigate the impacts of the most harmful invasive species across Europe. Species included on the list are subject to restrictions on import, breeding, transport and release.

🦟 Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) Week 2026 | Climate Change & Invasive Mosquitoes

Did you know that warmer temperatures can help invasive mosquitoes spread?
Rising temperatures accelerate mosquito development, allowing more generations to emerge during the season and extending their activity from spring to late autumn. Species such as the Korean bush mosquito (𝘈𝘦π˜₯𝘦𝘴 𝘬𝘰𝘳𝘦π˜ͺ𝘀𝘢𝘴) and the Asian bush mosquito (𝘈𝘦π˜₯𝘦𝘴 𝘫𝘒𝘱𝘰𝘯π˜ͺ𝘀𝘢𝘴) are increasingly able to establish and spread in Europe.
Monitoring programmes are essential to track these changes. In Liguria (Italy), ARPAL is involved in surveillance and research activities, including the cross-border ALIEM VIGIL project, which studies invasive alien species in the Mediterranean and supports the early detection of new introductions.
