🌍 Today we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026!

This year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact”, reminds us that protecting biodiversity starts with local action, collaboration, and shared knowledge.

At the European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN), part of the Biodiversity Knowledge Centre (KCBD), we support biodiversity protection by providing data, tools, and scientific knowledge on invasive alien species across Europe. From citizen science observations to policy support, local contributions can help generate a broader impact for ecosystems and biodiversity conservation.

Every observation, dataset, and local initiative matters. Together, local actions can support global biodiversity goals.

🚨 ALERT – New Detection of an Invasive Alien Ant in Italy 🇮🇹

A new occurrence of the invasive alien ant Brachyponera chinensis (Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1422 of 17 July 2025) has been officially reported in Italy via the NOTSYS notification system.

The species was already known to be present in Italy; this report concerns a detection in a previously unrecorded area, highlighting the ongoing spread.

NOTSYS is the official platform through which the EU Member States inform the European Commission and each other, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 1143/2014 on (IAS) of Union concern.
The system supports rapid and coordinated reporting of new detections and of eradication measures for species listed as of Union concern.

This new detection highlights the importance of early warning mechanisms and information sharing to prevent further expansion and to protect biodiversity, ecosystems, and public health across Europe.

A new article explores why the social dimension is crucial when dealing with invasive alien species (IAS).
Research shows that people often have mixed views on IAS, balancing perceived benefits and risks. Yet, most risk assessments still overlook how human perceptions, values, and behaviours shape both the spread of species and the success of management actions.
Understanding these dynamics is key to preventing conflicts and improving acceptance of management measures.

Rapid expansion of a Lessepsian migrant crab, (Crustacea, Brachyura, Portunidae), in the Ionian Sea: New records and early evidence of establishment 👉

The portunid crab, Gonioinfradens giardi (Nobili, 1905), native to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, is one of the recent alien decapods expanding in the Mediterranean Sea. Following the first confirmed Italian record from Portopalo di Capo Passero in November 2025, here we documented 11 additional....

🌍 Over 35,000 new alien species occurrences added to the EASIN Geodatabase

EASIN continues to expand its knowledge base on alien species in Europe with the integration of more than 35,000 new occurrence records provided by new Data Partners.

Datasets from the Swedish, Finnish and Italian Competent Authorities significantly improve the geographic coverage and quality of monitoring data. In addition, INVASIVESNET joins the EASIN network as a new Data Partner, contributing valuable observational records.

These new contributions strengthen the EASIN Alien Species Catalogue and support better monitoring and management of biological invasions across Europe.
