Italy's highest court, the Court of Cassation, has just struck down the so-called "minor issue," the controversial rule that stripped thousands of jure sanguinis applicants of their rightful claim to Italian citizenship simply because a parent naturalized elsewhere while they were still a minor.
For over a century, that shouldn't have mattered. A 2024 administrative circular changed that, and families across the Italian American community paid the price.
NIAF remained dedicated to this, working directly with parliamentarians who represent Italians abroad, including Hon. Christian Di Sanzo, and alongside the Italian American Congressional Delegation (IACD) to keep this issue on the table in Rome and in Washington. Today's ruling is the outcome we've been advocating for.
