At the same time, all kinds of distances are cancelled. Everywhere in the world, South and North become just one: NORTH. In the Western territories of the Northern World and mostly Europe, a new Middle South is born. In the NORTH, the deal between society and government has always been clear. During fascism, society is asked to obey, during democracy, society is asked to debate. In both cases - in
the NORTH - art is the authorized voice of society. Therefore, during democracy, art HAS to debate. In the old South the deal between society and government has never been clear
and its not clear at the new Middle South either . This new MIDDLE-SOUTH is already visible in the self-transforming territories
such as Greece and Italy below Rome. People there aren't perfectly comfortable: even if they accept the ultra-modern
NORTHERN lifestyle,
there are those who are searching for an art that's somehow
different from the very successful industry of isolation that
contemporary art has become. In the NORTH, most public money are spend to protect. When fascism reigns, culture is protected by regulation. But even when there is democracy and culture seams free,
still it's controlled in elaborate, quite religious ways: art institutions
are the new Temples and their directors the new high priests. As for the artworks, these have to make it to the collections of the
Museums as sacrifice: artifacts of propitiation and worship. The people of the new MIDDLE SOUTH
aren't perfectly happy with the Church of Art and they are already looking for alternatives. Art forms in websites, videogames and software,
can pass from one computer to another,
from one network to another, can belong to collections and at the same time to everyone: they are digital graffiti. In cities such as Rome, where real graffiti are either immediately erased or blackened out, such Digital Graffiti are absolutely necessary. Speaking about Rome, I believe that this city is the capital of the new MIDDLE SOUTH. It is an important city, the way Berlin was once important, because in Rome, like in Berlin once, there is an emblematic wall: the Vatican Wall. On that ancient wall, the new wave of the Middle South crashes. The Vatican Wall is the first obstacle that the new MIDDLE SOUTH needs to throw down. In the process, all kinds of signed graffiti such as Sistine Chapel will be liberated and that will bring an air of good luck to the entire art of the MIDDLE SOUTH...

MANIFESTO PER L'ARTE IN MEDIO-SUD

Il nostro stile di vita si aggiorna in tempo reale. Ogni distanza si annulla. In qualunque luogo ci troviamo, Sud e Nord diventano una sola cosa: NORD. Nella parte occidentale del NORD sta nascendo un nuovo MEDIO-SUD. Al Nord, il patto tra società e governo è stato sempre chiaro. In una società fascista bisogna obbedire, in democrazia la società deve dibattere. In entrambi i casi, al NORD l’arte è il mezzo scelto per dare voce alla società. In democrazia, dunque, l’arte deve dibattere. Nel Sud i patti non sono mai stati chiari e neanche lo sono nel nostro nuovo Medio-Sud. Il MEDIO-SUD è già visibile in territori in trasformazione come la Grecia e l’Italia da Roma in giù. La gente del nuovo MEDIO-SUD non si trova del tutto a suo agio con lo stile di vita ultramoderno del Nord, e alcuni sono alla ricerca di un’arte che sia diversa da quella potente industria che produce isolamento che è oggi l’arte contemporanea. Al NORD, gran parte dei finanziamenti per l’arte sono destinati alla protezione. Sotto un governo fascista la cultura è protetta dalle norme. In democrazia, quando l’arte sembra potersi esprimere liberamente, è controllata in modo programmato, quasi religioso: le istituzioni d’arte sono i nuovi templi e i loro direttori gli alti prelati. Le opere d’arte arrivano nelle collezioni dei musei in forma di sacrifici, oggetti propiziatori e di culto. La gente del nuovo MEDIO-SUD non è contenta e sta già cercando un’alternativa alla Chiesa dell’arte. Siti web, videogame, software, per esempio, passano da un computer all’altro, da una rete all’altra; possono appartenere a collezioni e allo stesso tempo a tutti. Sono graffiti digitali. In una città come Roma, dove i graffiti sono cancellati o oscurati, le opere digitali sono necessarie. Roma deve essere considerata la capitale del nuovo MEDIO-SUD: è una città importante, perché a Roma, come una volta a Berlino, c’è un muro emblematico: il muro del Vaticano. Su quel muro antico si scontra l’onda del nuovo MEDIO-SUD. Il muro del Vaticano è il primo ostacolo che il nuovo MEDIO-SUD deve abbattere. Tutti i graffiti d’autore, come la Ca****la Sistina, sarebbero liberi e questo porterebbe fortuna all’arte del NUOVO MEDIO-SUD. (design based on the Manetas Emblem by Angelo Plessas)
