How is a myth born?
On April 30, 1945, Colonel William O. Darby, founder of the American Rangers, died in Torbole, Lake Garda, Italy, struck by shrapnel from an artillery shell. He was 34 years old.
Two days later the surrender of the German army and the end of World War II in Italy was declared.
Eighty years have passed and William O. Darby continues to be considered a hero.
Following the international success of their award-winning documentary “The Lost Mountaineers,” the producers Associazione Benàch and Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino have decided to tell his story in a documentary that investigates not only the legend, but the man behind the myth.
Three continents are the setting of his formidable life: the US of course when he was born and lived his formative years, Europe where he founded his Rangers (first and only US corps founded abroad, learning from the techniques of the British Commandos), North Africa where with his Rangers fought valiantly and finally Europe again with the tragic Battle of Cisterna and Torbole sul Garda, where he fell.

Il 30 aprile 1945, il colonnello William O. Darby, fondatore dei Ranger americani, morì a Torbole, sul Lago di Garda, in Italia, colpito dalle schegge di un proiettile di artiglieria. Aveva 34 anni.
Due giorni dopo fu dichiarata la resa dell'esercito tedesco e la fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale in Italia.
Sono passati 80 anni e William O. Darby continua ad essere considerato un eroe.
Dopo il successo internazionale del loro pluripremiato documentario "The Lost Mountaineers", i produttori Associazione Benàch e Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino hanno deciso di raccontare la sua storia in un documentario che indaga non solo la leggenda, ma l'uomo dietro il mito.
Tre continenti sono lo scenario della sua formidabile vita: gli Stati Uniti, naturalmente, dove nacque e visse i suoi anni formativi, l'Europa dove fondò i suoi Rangers (primo e unico corpo americano fondato all'estero, imparando dalle tecniche dei Commandos britannici), il Nord Africa dove con i suoi Rangers combatté valorosamente e infine di nuovo l'Europa con la tragica battaglia di Cisterna e Torbole sul Garda, dove cadde.
