One of the reasons Africa, especially Nigeria, struggles to develop is the mindset that everyone must be “on top.” There is too much discrimination, jealousy, hatred, the pressure to live a fake lifestyle, crime, and an unhealthy obsession with status and wealth.
I have lived in South Asia and Europe, and one thing I have noticed is that people are generally treated more equally. You often cannot tell who is rich or poor simply by looking at them. There is also a stronger sense of social support—when people are struggling financially, the government has systems in place to help them.
Development is not only about roads, buildings, or technology. It is also about changing our mindset, creating equal opportunities, supporting vulnerable people, respecting one another, and building a society where success is not measured by how much you can show off.
Until we begin to address these attitudes and build a culture based on equality, accountability, and genuine progress, development will remain a challenge.
