A Question of Consistency: The NPP’s Contradictory Actions
Recent developments within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) raise important questions about fairness, consistency, and the democratic principles that govern our nation.
When certain NPP Members of Parliament declared their intention to run as independent candidates, the Speaker of Parliament moved to declare their seats vacant—a step firmly grounded in parliamentary procedure. Interestingly, the NPP opposed this action, despite a similar precedent during their own administration, where MPs faced the same consequences.
Now, in an unexpected turn, the NPP has dismissed over 290 of its members, including those holding significant positions within the party. The reason? Their MP declared her intention to run as an independent candidate. These members have been barred from participating in any party activities or representing the NPP in any capacity.
This inconsistent approach raises serious concerns: Why does the NPP resist such measures in Parliament but enforce them so stringently within their party? Is this a reflection of internal disarray or selective application of rules?
As members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), we believe that Ghana deserves leaders who uphold the principles of fairness and consistency. Our nation’s democratic fabric must be preserved through actions that inspire trust and confidence, not through decisions that appear self-serving.
Let us continue to work together to build a Ghana where leadership is defined by integrity, transparency, and unwavering commitment to the values we share as a people.
