Seen from the air, there is a moment when Solfagnano stops reading as a castle and begins to read as a small country of its own — sixty hectares, a hundred and fifty acres near enough, on a spur above the Tiber valley between Perugia and Rome.
Fields still cut for hay each summer. Woods of umbrella pine, olive and vine. And, almost as an afterthought, a lake — quietly the estate’s own — the colour of bottle glass in the afternoon light.
None of it was landscaped to be admired. It is worked first and admired second, which is precisely why it looks the way it does.
