Per due giorni, a fine agosto, mi riempio di banchi, e non sono banchi qualsiasi.

C'è chi porta in piazza quello che ha coltivato con le proprie mani e chi cucina qui con me. Tutto nato nella mia terra, non arrivato da chissà dove.

Tornano Gli Orti di Pignone e qui vi mostro alcuni dei protagonisti.

For two days at the end of August, I’m surrounded by market stalls that are far from ordinary.

Some people bring to the square what they’ve grown with their own hands, whilst others cook here with me. Everything is grown right here in my local area – it hasn’t come from who knows where.

C'è chi arriva da lontano e, per un po', mi sceglie come casa.
È cominciata con Patricia, che mi ha guardato attraverso l'obiettivo. Poi è arrivato Li Ming, e ha portato tra le mie case uno sguardo venuto dall'altra parte del mondo. Poi Fariba, dall'Iran, che tra le mie colline è andata a cercare la sua luce. Ognuno ha lasciato qui un'opera nata da me, e se n'è andato portandomi un po' con sé.

A Casa Bellani si va avanti così, una residenza dopo l'altra.
E il prossimo? Chi sarà il prossimo a raccontarmi?

There are those who come from far away and, for a while, choose me as their home.
It began with Patricia, who looked at me through the lens. Then Li Ming arrived, bringing a perspective from the other side of the world into my homes. Then Fariba, from Iran, who came to seek her light amongst my hills. Each of them left behind a work born of me, and set off, taking a little bit of me with them.

At Casa Bellani, life goes on like this, one residency after another.
And the next one? Who will be the next to tell my story?

C'è un anello che parte dal paese e si arrampica tra le mie rocce coperte di muschio, dove un tempo qualcuno aveva costruito un villaggio che poi il tempo ha lasciato andare.

Si cammina per un'ora e mezza nel bosco, senza fretta e senza fatiche particolari, finché a un certo punto, quando meno ci si aspetta, arriva il mio ponte: le arcate di un vecchio acquedotto, sotto cui si passa mentre sopra, un tempo, correva l'acqua.

È lì che di solito ci si ferma [taggatemi nelle vostre passeggiate]

There is a circular walk that starts in the village and winds its way up through my moss-covered rocks, where someone once built a village that time has since left to decay.

You walk for an hour and a half through the woods, at a leisurely pace and without any particular effort, until at a certain point, when you least expect it, you come to my bridge: the arches of an old aqueduct, which you pass under whilst, long ago, water once flowed above.

Per anni si è detto che i paesi come me erano destinati a spegnersi.
Poi ho visto che la mia piazza era ancora piena di bambini che la conoscono meglio delle loro stanze. Ho visto la gente scegliere i pomodori da chi li ha coltivati, chiamandolo per nome, e la biblioteca tenere le porte aperte anche quando fuori non c'era nessuno a chiederlo.

Sono le cose che altrove hanno smesso di difendere, e che a Pignone si è deciso di non lasciare andare.
Se ci si ferma ad ascoltarle, forse si capisce perché a qualcuno è bastato per restare.

For years, people have said that villages like mine were doomed to die out.
Then I saw that my village square was still full of children who know it better than their own bedrooms. I saw people choosing tomatoes from the very people who’d grown them, calling them by name, and the library keeping its doors open even when there was no one outside to ask for it.

These are the things that elsewhere have ceased to be cherished, but which Pignone has decided not to let go of.
If you stop to listen to them, perhaps you’ll understand why, for some, that was enough to make them stay.

Sotto Pignone si apre la Grotta Grande.
Gallerie scavate dall'acqua nel calcare, un pozzo di 17 metri con un laghetto sul fondo, e le stalattiti che non sono finite: si stanno ancora formando, goccia dopo goccia.

Fu utilizzata in passato anche cava di alabastro ed è per questo che all'ingresso restano le lastre.

Non si può visitare liberamente, ma dalla strada provinciale è possibile raggiungere l’imboccatura.

Anche questo è Pignone, sotto le colline delle Cinque Terre.

The Grotta Grande lies below Pignone.
Tunnels carved out of the limestone by water, a 17-metre-deep shaft with a small lake at the bottom, and stalactites that are still growing: they’re still forming, drop by drop.

It was also used as an alabaster quarry in the past, which is why slabs of alabaster remain at the entrance.

It is not open to the public, but you can reach the entrance from the provincial road.

This, too, is Pignone, beneath the hills of the Cinque Terre.

🥔Una patata non fa notizia, ma la nostra sì.

Cresce solo qui, nelle due valli di Pignone e Casale, dove il terreno è alluvionale e le orticole vengono meglio che altrove.
E ha una cosa che le altre non hanno: non si sfarina, lega.

Per questo a Pignone non è un contorno, ma è l'ingrediente. Il pane si fa con le patate, la torta si fa con le patate, gli gnocchi tengono senza cadere a pezzi.

Una valle intera ha costruito la sua cucina intorno a un tubero che detto così sembra poco, ma bisogna provarla per capire.

🥔A potato isn’t exactly breaking news, but ours is.

It grows only here, in the two valleys of Pignone and Casale, where the soil is alluvial and vegetables thrive better than anywhere else.
And it has something the others don’t: it doesn’t fall apart, it holds together.

That’s why in Pignone it isn’t a side dish, but the main ingredient. Bread is made with potatoes, cakes are made with potatoes, and the gnocchi hold their shape without falling apart.

An entire valley has built its cuisine around a tuber that, put like that, doesn’t sound like much, but you have to try it to understand.

⚠It’s harvested in August. It won’t be long now.
